I tried to see Willy Wonka, but it was sold out. Instead, on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I went for the rentals.

In anticipation of the remake, the original Bad News Bears was available on dvd. I think this is the first time I've seen the movie as an adult, and I have a newfound appreciation. I played multiple sports every year growing up, and of all those teams, I think only my 3rd grade baseball team won a 1st Place trophy, while the rest of the teams in all sports generaly did not even have winning records. However, I always enjoyed playing, and the winning or losing part never really seemed to matter much (although that may in part explain my career). I also enjoyed the nostalgia aspect of BNB, looking back to a time when alcoholism was funny and you could give a beer to a 9 y.o. kid and not get arrested.

Also rented Step Into Liquid, a movie I've been meaning to watch for a long time. Though the "Saving the world, one wave at a time" message was laid on a little thick at times, the director's passion for the subject was nevertheless infectious. The photography was so beautiful I could've watched with the sound off.

I also picked up a copy of Tony Hawk's Big Skateboard Tour (I think the 2002 version). Meh. I'll just wait for the next Spike Jonze output in that genre.

Whoa. I remember seeing that movie sometime in the Mesozoic Era. Also, I went to a dinner party at the house of a friend's parents, and the parents had some friends of theirs over; one of whom was the director of the Bad News Bears (the original one). I remember thinking how pathetic it was that he was still clinging to that past glory. Maybe I'll rethink my silent belittling of him.

That's an interesting assortment. Bad News Bears - what year is that from? That is ages old. Speaking of which, Tony Hawk just keeps going on and on and on. I am pretty sure he was in magazines already by the time I was somewhere in high school.

Ah, so you met Michael Ritchie. I'd be impressed. He also directed Downhill Racer and Fletch. He's also been involved in some projects that could count towared your silent belittlement (Fletch Lives, BNB Go to Japan, and other non-sequal atrocities), but, as with penske and his socks, I always judge an artist by his best work.

Yes! Fletch too! That's right -- that didn't register as so pathetic with me, somehow (not that BNB was a bad movie -- it just seemed that to cling so desperately to it decades later was feeble.) He brought it up no fewer that eight times.

Perhaps I should have been a little more vocal with my ridicule.

I don't mind Kruk as much as Berman. Berman thinks he's a broadcast legend and his bone-dry, boring, old, played-out Bermanisms completely detract from the highlights (which 90% of the people watching have seen while watching the day's games anyway).

Kruk sucks because he's stupid. He's almost as dumb as Joe Morgan. They like him because he takes a stand on stuff. But if the stand he's taking is so stupid that it makes no sense, I'd rather listen to Peter Gammons break down all of baseball. Now that guy is a legend.

I saw National Treasure on the weekend. It was a fairly charming piece of harmless fluff, I rather enjoyed myself.

The whole bit about putting lemon juice on the Declaration of Independence gave me the heebie-jeebies, though. Treasure of the Templars blah blah whatever - that was the part I found totally unbelievable.

BR(Having once been pretty much bitchslapped by a librarian for opening a latched manuscript front cover first, I can only imagine my punishment had I tried to handle it without gloves, never mind smearing it with acid.)C

Tony Hawk was around back when I retired from skating the first time - back when skateboarding was an age-appropriate activity for me. He made a good deal of money during the late 80s/early 90s skate boom. Then he went bankrupt and lost everything during the bust. However, he kept skating, and it was kind of nice to see him cashing in when I started skating again a few years ago.

I've since retired from skating again, as my ankles seem especially prone to injury and slow to recover. I was never able to come up with a good explanation when people saw me limping around in air casts and asked me how I hurt myself. The truth provoked funny looks coupled with subtle admonishment. Lucky for Tony he didn't go to law school in his lean years.

I didn't see it, but it seems to me that a runner going from first to second is permitted to interfere with the fielder in a way that a runner going from home to first is not. That said, I don't know the rules, and what you describe sounds sketchy.

I turned down the volume on the Homerun Derby b/c I couldn't stand to listen to Berman. Can't they put Soup on TV and Berman on the radio?

Kruk is so fucking dumb is embarrassing. Harold Reynolds wasn't doing himself any favors by claiming that Jon Garland was performing so well b/c he is a 5th starter and gets to face other 5th starters. Right, b/c 5th starters match up with each other for the rest of the year -- dumbass.
