That someone is wrong. An adverb doesn't need a hyphen. It's abundantly clear what it's modifying.

They are wrong. There is no need to hyphenate when an adverb is modifying an adjective.

The Supreme Court ruling was highly publicized. The highly-publicized Supreme Court ruling requires that suspects who are in custody receive information regarding their rights.

It depends on whether it is modifying a noun or not. I'm sure dtb will provide greater detail and clarity, but that is the short of it.

ETA: I have read the other advice on this subject, and I am standing by my statement. It is not clear to me whether sunny's usage of the phrase required hyphenation or not.

EFTA: I was not aware of the adverb usage exception. I'll take hte grammar nerds' word for it though. Luckily I write only in simple sentences, so the issue never arises.

That is the rule when the first word is not an adverb.

This is how I remember the rule you stated above:

She lived during the eighteenth century.

Curt Schilling count?

BOSTON - Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and wife Shonda paid to fly a New Orleans family of nine to Boston and pledged to provide them with housing for a year.

“When we realized how many people had nowhere to go, we didn’t just want to make a donation,” Shonda Schilling told The Boston Globe. “We decided we wanted to bring an entire family here and put them up.”

The families connected through a Web site, openyourhome.com, which matches displaced families with people willing to house them. The Schillings registered Friday and on Saturday anonymously arranged for the family to fly to Boston.

“He said, ‘I would like to help you,”’ Efrem Fields, 31, told The Globe in a phone interview from his hotel. “He didn’t say who he was.”

Fields and his wife, Shelita, 28, and their kids met the Schillings at the hotel. Fields said his new friend looked familiar.

NO HYPHENS ON COMPOUND ADJECTIVES WHERE THE FIRST PART OF THE COMPOUND IS AN ADVERB ENDING IN "LY"

Now, is that so hard?

Oooh. So close. That is the rule for other compound adjectives (if it comes at the end of a sentence, no need for hyphen); however, the "ly" rule is true no matter where the compound appears in the sentence.

Really, people; how much is it to ask that you read the Chicago Manual of Stlye chapters on punctuation from cover to cover and memorize them?

It wouldn't compute. I can't see Owen Wilson getting worked up about anything, let alone a hyphen.

I saw Broken Flowers last night and it was really quite excellent. For a slow-moving Bill Murray movie, it is way better than Lost in Translation.

I bought a bunch of Ryan Adams discs over the weekend and happened upon that tune they play throughout Old School - the one where he sings “When you’re young you get sad...” I shouldn’t listen to that on the train. I really shouldn’t listen to it five times on repeat. It was all I could do not to turn around and take the train right back home...

“Hi, Honey... Yeh. You’re going to be working a little bit harder from now on... You can hack the next few mortgage payments, right?”

Yes, it was slow, but it didn't bug me.

I think it's entirely possible that I want to have one thousand of Bill Murray's babies and I viewed Scarlett Johanssen as competition - so that could have been why LiT did not do much for me.* I liked the hug at the end though.

*This doesn't make much sense because Broken Flowers is chock-full of women - potential competition. But none of them are (is? - damn) Scarlett. haha.

Anyone who hasn't seen "The Aristocrats" should do so at once. If only for the Christopher Walken impression, which is not to imply that the rest of the movie is not funny as hell, which it is. Funny. As hell. The rest of the movie.

I forget who here invented liking the Christopher Walken impression from "The Aristocrats" but to them I say mad props, big up, love the sistahs, etc.

I always considered you a thinking outside the box, not on the bandwagon kind of guy. Yet you’re shilling for the trendiest movie in years. Penn worked outside the industry on that one, so Eisner blackballed the film to no screens.

robustpuppy 09-06-2005 04:00 PM

I don't want to want to watch it

But I might not be able to resist "Breaking Bonaduce." Apparently he has a complete personal meltdown on the show - moreso than you might expect.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/04/ar...on/04aurt.html

Also, did anybody catch the Sex Inspectors on HBO? It's essentially "What Not to Wear" for couple's sex lives. Let's just say that TV's obsession with making people over might have gone a bit too far, although considering the concept, the show was actually tastefully done and not as excruciatingly embarrassing as you might think.
