Well, from what you and E/O have said, cyclists DO use the gels. I stand corrected. Although my Buddy who does Ironmans carries hamburgers for the bike ride. Not gels. He's fast, but he's not elite. Personally, I could much more easily eat a banana at mile 19 than some GU. For me, GU is drive-heave-city.
Yeah, I did not mean to pile on. I had not read E/O's or Penske's responses when I posted. Your Buddy has an iron stomach.

The hamburger eating people who are at least "fast" on through to elite are the exceptions.

From my experience the thought of any real food is dry heave city, although my gastrointestinal systems largely shut down during races.

I have spent more days existing on espresso, gels and cola than I can remember.

Those were the days indeed.

I have had to swear off Odd Todd ever since I discovered more than one show that we both watched - including that Animal Cops one. It was just too scary - being like Odd Todd that is, not the Animal Cop show.

I miss him.

Gels, bars, powder, liquids are just different forms of the same thing, an energy source that is not bulky that you can take during competition. Hell, I' m not elite elite and I have my own "supersecret" formulation combining gels, powders and water that took about dozen marathons and 4 IMs to perfect.
What I meant by a mixture was that the elites have their own concentration of sport's drink, not including gels, etc. Of course, I could be wrong. They may throw some gel in there, although that conflicts with my sources. Neither Paula nor KK reveal what they have in their mixtures, so I guess it could be anything...

Nice eye. There really wasn't a reason to capitalize the "B" in buddy, was there?

Not that I am anything other than a fat slob couch potato, but how did the conversation morph from protein bars to things like gels and clif bars that are pretty much totally carbohydrates? I'm no doubt missing something. I really don't understand how a gel is different from a sports drink, other than it doesn't provide hydration.

FWIW, fyi, for the record, I use gels mixed with unflavored powders. NTTAWWT. I like the taste of the chocolate flavoured gels and like Costanza before me, I bow down to the evil lord of the cocoa bean.

I used to know a chick who would scarf down a quarter pounder au fromage at the turnaround at Hawi, but her name was not Buddy.

"WHEREAS, people living near the road already live under the cloud of opprobrium created by having a road that many believe is cursed running near their homes and through their homeland; and
WHEREAS, the number "666" carries the stigma of being the mark of the beast, the mark of the devil, which was described in the book of revelations in the Bible; and
HEREAS, there are people who refuse to travel the road, not because of the issue of safety, but because of the fear that the devil controls events along United States route 666; and
WHEREAS, the economy in the area is greatly depressed when compared with many parts of the United States, and the infamy brought by the inopportune naming of the road will only make development in the area more difficult."

U.S. 666: "Beast of a Highway"?
I purposely chose my route from SF to Atlanta such that I could travel down route 666 during one fun spring break.
