Country Club Diner in Northeast Philly still has the best rice pudding I've ever eaten.

I've been there to take the waters (during race season, bien sur). Perhaps the true measure of how the mighty have fallen is that the candidate of the Party of Elihu Root is a carpetbagging Son of Garibaldi instead of the descendant of a Patroon.

I forgot about that new Water Park by the Glens Falls Raceway.

I think Arnold's (which I drive by nearly every day) recently raised the price to $3.49. It will probably come back down, as eggs, milk and meat do too. And there's a 24-hour, stand alone diner 7 blocks over, but it's probably not quite that cheap.

That seems like a stupid requirement. I thought if you could order breakfast at any time, day or middle of the night and the place had booths and classic diner seating at a counter, it qualified.

The great thing about NY 20 (since this is the FB not the PB) - the big campaign stops are almost all diners. As I read it, the two candidates and their surrogates visited about 5 diners yesterday. Where else but upstate NY can you find so many diners left - with people in them?

They're all over NJ. They tend to be wonderful -- cheap, huge portions, food that ranges from pretty good to really good, and (at the good ones) 25 kinds of pie and cake, that they serve in slices approximately the size of a highway off-ramp.

You have to overlook the fat guys in sweatsuits who look like Soprano casting-call washouts.

Why?

There are a few stand-alones still here, but diners are about the food, decor and likelihood they're open when you're shit-faced and need some greasy food.

1- you honor the guidos, not overlook them
2- you can tell your ass is from SF- there aren't 25 pies/cake flavors a man will eat. no offense.

I've had this conversation with RB here. I love Steak n Shake. My cousin recently got married in the mid-west and I think I flew out there more for the trips to Steak n Shake than to attend the wedding.

There are so many things on the menu I like:
  • frisco melt;
  • 5-way chili (although Skyline does it better);
  • oreo shake;
  • cheese fries (and eating the skinny cheese-covered fries with a fork); and
  • fried chicken salad.

Dear lord I'm hungry.

Count me in as a Steak and Shake fan. There is one near my parents' new house. They cannot figure out my obsession with going to Steak and Shake, but at least they indulge the request.
