Go to Ess-a-Bagel, H&H or Murray's. Each has multiple locations in the city. If you want the best, go to Russ & Daughters on East Houston. Never been there, but have heard great things.

When I'm with a New Yawker, we inevitably walk into a little place with a great Bagel/Bialey and Lox. I just never remember what/where they are. But I'll remember these, next time I'm in town.

I don't know how you people survive without good bagels. I think it's one of the top ten reasons why I will most likely never leave the city.

Time for a trip to cowgirl creamery.

You can get them upstate (Poppies, Liberty, NY), and there are pretty good bagels in Montreal. Kupels in Brookline are the best around here, but still not quite NY standards.

I have found no place outside of NY where one should eat a Bialey.

The Tasty (a.k.a. The Chew-and-Screw) is gone?!?

Really? We're assuming I have $500,000 liquid?

How about the recently closed ChinaLite on Southport? Or anywhere on Clark?

Does Steak n' Shake do stores w/o drive-thrus? If so, I think we can make it work. If not,we'd have to buy out Taco Bell, which would present some issues.

The Tastee. Oh, all those late night hot dogs on the weird bun/bread thing... I always got the double burger with special sauce at Elsie's. A gooey awesome mess.

Long gone. Cafe Pamplona survives, as does the Hong Kong, but if you have recollections of Harvard Square from the 80s or 90s, it's very different today.

Think large open air mall.

As for the name, it's all about that goodwill. I think 2nd Avenue lost their lease and had to move to toity toid and toid, which isn't far from Carl's. Damn. Now I want a cheesesteak too.

TM

I have to disagree. Katz's gets high marks for thick juicy cuts, but 2nd Ave has(d) that mountain of perfectly sliced meat cut to order. The best sandwiches I have had. Oh, and Langer's in LA is my 2nd favorite (slightly above Katz's), mainly due to the spicy flavoring. I will say that Katz's was awesome when we were there on the last trip, although the sandwich was pretty tiny for a deli.

We should compare notes, because as it turns out a significant portion of my job is spent discussing and planning "business" trips based on Food Network / Travel Channel "best of" shows. We have made significant national progress on the hot dogs and BBQ, and sandwiches are the current focus due to the Man vs. Food influence.

Long ago, I had a sandwich at a place in SF that has since disappeared -- chicken salad with asiago cheese. What made it wonderful was that the chicken salad was made with chipotles. I've replicated this at home, pretty successfully except I can't grill the bread the same way they did.

That fact, and the sad state of pizza in the Bay Area, will always haunt me.

The burritos make up for it, but not entirely.
