What doesn't make me love the game is when Greggg brings in subs.

I only watched US v England, and my level of ignorance re. futbol is even worse then my normal level of ignorance, but our right defender with the pastel short hair, seems pretty cocky, was England a bad game for him or is he just not very good (relative to World Class comp)?

Dest? He's good.

A lot of losing the ball it seemed, at least that game?

Not consistent with my recollection. Held 3 lions to zero goals. That's pretty good.

But I was several pints in.

Can't argue with that result. And he was great against Iran.

How awesome would it be if Japan and Costa Rica moved on from Group E? Suck it, Spain and Germany.

1. Hard to argue against the play of a US defender in a game where they held England to zero goals.

2. These two games this afternoon are just bonkers.

For a single minute just now Costa Rica was making that dream a real possibility. I'm really hoping the Ticos score again just to fuck with EVERYONE's narrative.

Ultimately, it was too little too late, but that second half was the kind of relentless, desperate, all out attacking play that makes me love the game.

That game was just insane and they ALMOST did it. I was heartbroken for them more than if they'd been crushed or even just had a 1-0 win. So close.

I’m asking a serious question about a game I know little about. The fact that they didn’t score doesn’t mean all played great, does it? Did you guys see lapses that the other players didn’t have? Maybe English is strong on that side and some turnovers were to be expected?

And saying all defense players were great because the result was great is like saying PPNYC was a great addition because this Board was always big fun in the time period she was posting.

Heard the Polish coaches were telling their players, no yellow cards!

A bunch of people* thought the late Saudi goal was the end for Mexico, but it didn't change anything. Mexico still would have gone through with a goal.

* Including the sports anchor on the ten o'clock KTVU news last night, who should have known better.

Some people who know well liked his performance against England and thought he was the best US player in the Iran match.

I think it's a fair question. A bad pass in the middle third that leads to a quick counterattack can be really bad. A bad pass when you're taking a risk on an attacking move in the final third is not the same thing at all.

England has really talented attacking players, including Saka and Sterling on the wings. Neither really did much in the game. You've got to credit Robinson and Dest, the US outside backs, for that, although they didn't do it alone. Berhalter gets props for a defensive plan that really limited the English attack, which is why you saw their centerbacks, Stones and Maguire, passing it back and forth between each other so much.

OTOH, while it was a huge game for us, England was hoping it was the second game of seven, and I think their coach figured that if he got through with a draw and clubbed Wales like a baby seal, they'd be first in the group and on their way.
