I have great aunts named Edith, Beatrice and Teddy (her Ziegfield Follies showgirl stage name but i dig it). I also like Maude quite a bit. Maybe something in a Mavis?

And str8, may I suggest Ely over Evan? Evan sounds like the schlubby, skinny debate camp wuss who went to Yale and became a name dropper in Hollywood who tried to make a buck ripping off the fans.

Top 20 the year I was born and a decade thereafter. It's been slipping lately to the top 150. I didn't meet that many people with my name when I was a kid.

I won't comment on my dress, but I will not that in my birth year, multiple variations of my name were in the top 1000 for boys, but no variation for girls. Today, there are mutliple variations of my name for girls in the top 100.

fwiw, I love the name Hagar. I wouldn't name my kid it though, for one reason which I won't say and the other reason is that kids would call her "hag" or something. Maybe I will name my next cat "Hagar." If my next cat is a boy, I will name him "Chairman Meow." Just fyi.
I have been sort of silently giggling at the posts leading up to this one, but Chairman Meow just put me over the top into outright guffaw (which is sub-optimal when sitting on a trading desk - just fyi).

Girls are more like accessories. Pretty, trend-following names make them seem more attractive to successful men. Traditional names make them seem old. My grandmother's name was Mildred. That seems to heavy and depression-era to dump on a cute little pixie.

If it was going to be Ely, I can assure you it would be Eli. But no, it's Evan, and the middle name will be Holden. (Or Holdem).

Oh, and I was re-reading mysteries of Pittsburgh last night; you remind me of Phlox in so many ways.

Nope. AoN, I have two grandmothers named Mary.* But then again, I'm Irish, so that's probably not that unusual.

I like the name Mary. If I had a daughter now, that would be one of the possibilities.

Don't expect any little Bernice or Emmett Slaves anytime soon.

My great grandparents names (can't remember one set) aren't any better - Ruth, Lessie & Lucille; Walter, Sidney and Alexander. Alexander isn't so bad, but I'd probably use the celtic form, Alisdair, and get my kid beaten up a lot.

The biggest concern with naming your child that is that he's likely to learn how to spell his name before you do.

If I were to breed, which I'm not, and I had a daughter, I might name her Amanda after a high school friend. That Amanda was named after a high school friend of her mom's. Plus it's a song, I think, by some hair band. I could be wrong about either the existence of the song or the hair-band-i-ness of the group. And don't forget "Oh, Mandy, you came and you gave without taking, and I sent you away. Oh, Mandy, when you kissed me and stopped me from shaking ..."

I love the name Katherine, by the way. With a C is good, too. I'm also fond of Gertrude, which to others may sound frumpy, but belongs to a very beautiful Swedish/German cousin so I associate it with her.
