Moving On -- Help Wanted
I have been stuck in my small Southern home town since graduating from law school and have decided it is time to move somewhere else. I actually like living here, but have become bored with the work situation and fed up with the lack of available men and realize that I must leave.
So in the next few weeks, i'm going to be touring the U.S. trying to decide where to move to and what would be the right place for me. I'm not too concerned about finding a job and have no intention of ever working for a law firm again and have enough $ put by to last for a while so I've decided I'll worry about figuring out what to do after I move somewhere. That leads me to ask, what do you think is the best way to get to know a strange city? What do I look for? How do I judge? I am open to anything, which makes it hard to narrow my list. And I don't have a particular list of cities. (the only place I will not be moving to will be Houston.) Keep in mind, that I may be moving to a city where I don't know anyone, so I suppose the ease of getting to know people is one factor, i need to consider, but how does one know that just by visiting a city? So any advice and recommendations from the FB would greatly be appreciated. Thanks RL |
I'm glad I don't live in NYC

More Olympics Stuff
Ever wonder about the dearth of Olympics posts from Ty? This may help explain.
I feel bad that Russia's Anna Pavlova did not medal. She was one of the few Eastern European gymnasts that did not look like she was destined to be doing double anal in the near future. |

More On the Phallic Mascot
From http://www.athens2004.com/en/OlympicMascots
Athena and Phevos [the phallic mascots] . . . remind us of the pleasure of indulging in games; they highlight that the value of participation is higher than that of victory.* At the same time, they are brother and sister . . . *I'm assuming this must be a euphemism for orgasm. |
Moving On -- Help Wanted
The OM moved to Austin by using your method. He would go to a city, find the downtown area, sit at a bar, and talk to people. If you check out the alt-weeklies, you can get a great feel for the place. Ultimately, it all depends on what you're looking for in a city -- culture, educated people, great bar scene, lots of attractive singles, good parks, affordable housing, easy commutes.
Much of this you can discover online. I think Poynter.org has a list of alt-weeklies. |

RL, I moved to the Bay Area without knowing anyone there. One of my sisters lived about two hours away, but for the day-to-day stuff, I was entirely on my own. I had about three hours before the interview to scope the town out and decide whether or not I wanted to live there. I drove around a bit, stopped in a few bookstores and cafes, wandered through the neighborhoods, and figured it was a good place to be. If I were you, I'd start thinking about how you want to live. I can eliminate a good part of the country because I fairly strongly believe that snow should be something that you drive to, play in, and then drive away from. I also sort of decided that I'm more of a west coast person than an east coast person. The snow thing had a lot to do with that, though I think it's also an attitude sort of thing. Also think about where you've been in the past and where you liked and follow some instincts. I was offered a job in Amarillo once, I've only driven through, but I didn't even consider the job because I knew I'd be miserable there. Same goes for a suburb in Northern California. Though, the job I did take in a strange town, I knew almost immediately that I'd like it. (Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I made my college decision the same way.) Are you a city person? Do you want natural beauty? Is accessability to other parts of the country important to you? Do you have a general idea of the people? Do you want a college town? I know a couple who are thinking about leaving Houston, and they just went on a three month road trip to check out most of the western part of US and Canada, though they've already eliminated some places based on their past experiences. If you have time to travel, see where you'd like to live. Spend some time doing the types of things you'd do if you lived somewhere. Check out the bookstores and the movie theaters. Check out the restaurants and the parks. See what the newspapers have to say. Drive and walk around. Hell, you can sort of tell what a town is like by just going to a grocery store. Also, there are differences between closeby places, even if they're subtle. For example, I'd move to Taos in a heartbeat, though I wouldn't be as quick to move to Santa Fe, and it'd take a lot of persuading to get me to Albuquerque. One of the jobs I turned down in California was only fifty miles from where I'd lived happily, but I knew if I moved there, it'd suck my soul. |
Recent Legal Developments
Death by autoerotic asphyxiation, like death from other dangerous recreational activities such as skydiving and rockclimbing, should be covered under the terms of an accidental death policy, sez the 2d Cir. http://www.abanet.org/journal/ereport/au20rope.html (boring text, no good pitcures).
"The 'effect sought by the practice of autoerotic asphyxiation is a temporary effect that, absent an accident, is not injurious; and injuries resulting from the practice are unintended,' Kearse wrote for the Aug. 9 majority. 'We thus see no differences between engaging in autoerotic asphyxiation and engaging in hazardous extreme sports activities, insofar as the coverage provided by the Unum policy is concerned.' Critchlow v. First Unum Life Insurance Co. of America, No. 02-7585. Judge Ellsworth VanGraafeiland had this to say in his spirited dissent: "Moreover, until someone whose opinion I respect honestly informs me that as a general proposition, he or she would not hesitate to undergo a session of autoerotic asphyxiation through strangulation, I will not change my mind." I'm just glad he didn't make his clerks draw straws for "research" on this one. |

No other cities are worth living in. So if you are in your 30's, it is either the Bay area or NYC. Pick one based on whether you fear terrorists or earthquakes more. |
