Dear p_c,
Thanks for deflecting last night. Had I been here, I'm sure it would have been me taking verbal abuse from NJ - the nerve.
How the hell does the armpit (ncs' term) get the balls to reject ME? As if.

What I dont get is the importance many women place on their men having this ambition and passion about their career and why being passionate about you r mate isnt more important. is this a mars-venus thing? Women are attracted to the caveman with the biggest club, who can be the most protective, and brings in the most kill? I must be missing something.

Can yall provide enlightment?
No idea. I fall in line with your line of thinking -- though it would be cool to be passionate about what you do, it is not essential. I do draw the line at deadbeats who lack the ambition to hold down a JOB. But I wouldn't have a problem with dating a lawyer who didn't love what he does. Actually I DO date a lawyer who doesn't love what he does. We get to not love what we do together.

In other words, I can't help you.

Ive heard this before from others. She said she thought that while I was an accomplished and smart guy, that she didnt get the sense that I was extremely passionate about working at my firm or that I had definite career goals in my mind that I had made a plan to go after. But she still wanted to spend time with me and wanted to know how I felt about her thoughts.

I told her that Im far more passionate about relationships and people I care about and that I consider my work to be just a job. Its a means for me to do the things I want. There are partso f it I really like, parts that I get passionate about, but I find the greatest fulfilment and enrichment in making and nurturing a connection with someone. I dont really understand the compulsion for planning and achieving a certain type of career success. The peeps I know who do that seem to be more driven, more workaholic, and less available for the people in their personal lives, and theyre much more assholish. I dont want to be that kind of person.

You're right. She's wrong. Run away. Fast. Society has confused her.

Don't know if this has shown up before but

http://www.iondesign.net/drinkometer/

estimates how much $ you've spent on booze in your lifetime and correlates your drinking habits with someone famous.

$55,000+ for me. And apparently I'm Boris Yelstin.

It's British so it starts your legal drinking age at 17.

Hmm. I'm Boris Yeltsin too at $128k (that translates to 0.8 of a ferrarri). Is anyone not Boris Yeltsin?

I know that Paris (Texas) is busy ruining Urlacher's career -- you know if you've seen him play lately -- but whose jersey is it that Mascara Reid is hexing? I thought it would be Keyshawn Johnson, but the colors don't look right for it to be a Bucs jersey.

On other, unrelated notes:

Thanks to all who also noted that the Cubs curse bleacher-ball boy looks like Jared, from Subway. Glad to know I wasn't the only one who saw the play and noticed that resemblance first. If Subway's ad agency had any sense of humor, they'd do one of their stupid 'What Would Jared Do?' commercials using the Wrigley wrongdoing as a basis.

It's always a happy thing when the fall TV shows have all had their debut (even better if they get immediately cancelled). If I saw that stupid ABC promo for 'It's All Relative' ("I blame Clinton!") one more time, I might have actually gotten worked up enough to send an email.

Now, if only baseball could end so the Fox shows could get their first episodes (and cancellations) out of the way.

That is all.

Dump her, SD. She'll never fully understand you and how you will never let what you do for a living define who you are as a person. She will never understand that when you are not really a lawyer, you are just really good at playing lawyer. She will never understand that when you wear the skinny black tie with the piano keys on it, you are saying that while you may be employed at a law firm, deep down you're a real cool cat. You are so good at your act, she was attracted by who you pretend to be. Now you've revealed yourself to her and she's repulsed and horrified. Take the high road and dump her now.

Please, I have only been rejected once, that was rejected by Massachusetts as part of the Great Compromise. The rest of you went to great effort to keep me around and keep Canada from getting a piece of me (thank you).

New Jersey only wishes she even had the chance to reject me! Indeed!
