On the one hand, the smoking ban in DC for bars doesn't go into effect until next year (it's voluntary this year). On the other hand, it will join the long list of DC laws, such as speeding, red-light running, and homicide, that go unenforced. My prediction is smoking cameras.
That's what we said.

I think the key there is N.VA -- a tobacco state.

The inner Maryland suburbs of DC -- at least Montgomery County have smoking bans in place (DC itself has passed one -- or been trying to -- I think). In both my current office building and the past one, smokers have to go outside to light up.

But if you want to see smokers, go to the Midwest. Chicago (as TM noted) and even more so smaller cities like Cleveland and Cincinnati make DC look positively smoke-free.

Combined with a state-law ban on local ordinances (generally applicable). Arlington County would do the same thing as DC and MD. And they'd actually enforce it, like NYC apparently has (our mayors are no Giuliani and Bloomberg--indeed, even the ban has an exception for crack smoking).

maybe this is politics, but this proves Sebby right. the countries that use google most for searches including "sex" are the religious center of Pakistan, with Iran coming in 3rd. if you switch to "fuck" Iran comes in first.

It is small and crowded and one of the baristas is a very good person, but moody. She cops a 'tude and is very manic. One day nice, the next day bites my head off. They know my drink and have it for me by the time I pay...

So I've migrated for a month or so to a larger, more anonymous Starbucks. They mess up my drink all the time, but no one cops a 'tude at all. This morning, for reasons beyong my control I had to go back to my old Starbucks like the prodigal daughter. They asked me if I was on vacation, I told them the truth and I think they were miffed. Obviously I could have played it off...but I chose not to. It is a petty thing, but is customer loyalty that important? Should I feel contrite?
Since you asked: You should not give a shit about what they think of you.

And, yes, I appreciate the irony of this post. Heck, I revel in it.

Starbucks is fortunate to hear only the ringing of cash registers.

I only threw in NVa because Ty's blog link above was a Northern Virginia person saying that people smoke more in NY (all the more reason to disagree with his hypothesis, I know). My recent experience was all in the District.

Success!

The Mounds, Almond Joy, Kit Kats, Tootsie products and 50% of the Reeses products (the white chocoloate stuff and the "fast break" whatever the hell that is...) are gone!

The choice Reeses candies and a few Tootsie pops somehow managed to go undistributed.

the tootsie pops and rolls sit in every office undisturbed across the country the day after why do people still bother to buy them?

Someone was handing out the miniature Reese's peanut-butter cups last night. My three y.o. calls them "pie," and thinks they're the shiznit.

I dunno about the rest of the country, but these particular tootsie pops were selectively undistributed.

English, please. Did you choose not to give them out?

I like seafood. And I'm not just talking about fried shrimp. Salmon (which I didn't use to like), snapper, scallops. I have a fair number of seafood recipes somewhere. I'm a fish-eater. It just has to be cooked.

Translation: When speaking to me, assume I am a brick and remove any hint of subtlety and hit me over the head with whatever point you've made to everyone in the world but me.

You should try Vietnamese food. Start with a nice Pho on a cold day when you are feeling a little run down. You'll love it. I swear. You need to try it.
