I've only read a transcript, but frankly I've heard of worse. Definitely something no one should say, or especially leave on someone's voicemail, but at the same time the distribution of it by the recipient strikes me as a little troubling as well. Settle your arguments face to face. I'm hearing, though, that the recipient may have only intended the distribution to be in-house and it got out of hand.

In the interests of full disclosure, I know of, but don't personally know, the person who left the message.

The guy who left the voicemail sounds like a dickhead and shouldn't have left the voicemail, but I agree that it isn't particularly newsworthy (I've dealt with opposing counsel like him on more than one occasion). Might hurt his partnership prospects if he's up soon (seems like he should be based on his class year) and if many Winston partners get wind of it. Pretty embarrassing.

I hate dealing with people like this, but it's always nice when they do stupid shit like this.

From the back story I've heard around town, the VM sender was sending a bunch of e-mails in the day before a closing doing things like changing notice addresses because he and his firm hadn't caught them earlier. VM recipient got fed up with repeated changes immediately before closing and after a completed pre-closing process. I can understand how annoying that is when you're dealing with a very defined process like a loan and real estate transaction, and in the same situation, I've rejected changes like that and required that they be made in an amendment after closing. Anyway, VM recipient decided to make changes but sent an e-mail saying that there should be no further non-substantive changes, which resulted in the VM. I think the method of sending the VM around is pretty underhanded, since there are probably ethical considerations associated with publicizing private and potentially privileged messages. However, I love the fact that another slash and burn asshole got his comeuppance. I'd love to have a good enough relationship with the client in that situation that he or she will send a few e-mails or messages to put a guy like that is his place, or even hold the deal for a day or two. That would be perfect. I wonder how this all turned out.

WXRT reported this morning that a man had shot and killed an unarmed security guard at the Capitol after robbing two gun stores. He was arrested this morning in Springfield, as a result of phone tips identifying him and giving his location.

ETA I don't get all my news from the Daily show. I get the local stuff on the radio.

As many of us suspected when the great Oprah car giveaway was announced, there is a catch...

Turns out the recipients can pick their cars up between now and Feb. of next year -- as soon as they get the $$$ together to pay the federal income taxes on the prize. The taxes may amount to as much as $7,125, depending on the tax bracket the prize drives the recipient into. Some of the winners are expressing dismay that they now have to figure out where to come up with the money.

Waaah! Take a damn note on the car to cover the taxes. Or, do what most game show winners used to (when game shows dispensed prizes, not cash) and hock the stuff for sub-wholesale to the dealers standing outside the studio after the show.

My problem is the misconception of "Oprah gave away 273 new cars worth $7 M." GM picked up the tab to flock their dying Pontiac division so it doesn't got the way of Oldsmobile. Fantastic PR move all around.

Just a general note. The Chicago Tribune website always has on the front page 20 or 25 pictures from some of the top or more interesting stories of the week. chicagotribune.com Its actually one of my favorite things to go through on the internet, because they always have some human interest thing or another from in the city.

Whenever I hear about a coyote in Chicago, I invariably think, "stray mutt", whatever. This morning, the whole "Coyote swimming in the Chicago river downtown" thing had me giggling as I pictured some old lady in a high rise calling Ch. 9 as she watched a stuffed animal float by.

I didn't see the update that indicated they actually caught a coyote in a drain pipe to or from the river. So, today I'm scrolling through the pictures, and lo and behold, picture #6 is a very wet coyote getting dragged from the river by animal control. Whudda thunk it.

Apparently they can't sell the car, so I guess that it kind of sucks that they have to come up with the cash or get a loan somehow. I read initially that taxes would be paid, too but it turns out that's only local, state and license-related taxes, not federal income tax.

But, still, give me a fucking break. The article I read didn't really have people complaiing too much, just lamenting, but still. Cry me a fucking river. Free car ands you just have to pay the taxes on it, and the shit is under warranty for four years, too. They even get to customize them with the options they want. Only the incessane whiners who populate Oprah's show would complain about getting a free car.

One of the funnier results of these boards yesterday. A mid-level partner who knows I'm a gossip comes in and tells me, "you can't repeat this, but I have from an excellent source that GC and Piper are looking at a merger". I was like, what? I can't put that on the internet? Its been there for a week already, thanks to baltassoc and some bizjournal site.

They'd fire me someday, but where would they get their gossip?
