By late last month, the attorneys of Arter & Hadden knew the 160-year-old law firm was not going to survive its financial troubles.

That spawned a slew of late-night meetings about what was to be done and what would become of the firm's partners and employees. It also ushered in a bold proposal, one that would mean the firm's 76 Cleveland lawyers and many of its staff would not have to pack up their offices in the Huntington Building.

so many possible ways one could respond to that statement. ranging from well, duh to the 240 lawyers would not have left if the profits per partner would not have been so low.
