I think it's the ZZ Top beard that does it, but whatever it is, it's uncanny.

These days I just wear a stars and stripes or Harley bandanna tied around my head. It's a more natural look for Irish guys.

Or you can build your own jester hat: http://www.dinohaven.com/bak/index2.html

I think it's all in the attitude. If you're self-conscious about looking like a failed urban hipster and/or costumed throwback and/or Jack Abramoff, you won't be able to pull it off. If you throw it on your head and don't worry about it, you'll be fine. This is a good time of year to experiment, because it's not unusual for people to be in headwear in cold weather.

Find a nice classic fedora in black and see how it works for you.

Note: I hang out with a lot of men that wear hats, sometimes as costume, sometime not. I don't really notice them as all that unusual anymore. I'd say a good half of the men (most were African American, though my boyfriend is decidedly a white boy) in the bar I went to last night were wearing a of cap of this sort, in various fabrics and colors:

Second note: I have an extensive hat collection and wear hats frequently. I did this way before Mad Men ever became popular. I dig hats on women and men.

Having reviewed all reponses so far, it seems the answer, at least to (1) is no.

Several possibilities, but most say something else about the wearer.

For example:

or

or

There are a limited number of people who can pull off a cowboy hat. I probably could if I gained 50 pounds and a twang.

I am proud that I have only friended two people on FB, and that was when I opened my account. Everyone else friends me BECAUSE I AM FUCKING COOL.

Frankly, I am annoyed with the site and am checking it less and less.

I'm kidding. But I did post about that Mariah Carey fragrance last week. And nobody said a fucking word.

For starters I dont look like I am approaching middle age and I am a successful urban hipster, so I am not sure my epxerience is relevant, but, I wear one of two hats, depending on the occasion.

In my uber-urban hipster mode I go with the cashmere Gucci hat, it looks something like this, only no symbol indicating brand and its chocolate brown, to bring out my eyes.

The other one is a IronMan Hawaii finishers cap (baseball lid). I wear that to the gym and on warmer weekend days when I am in the drop top, with the top dropped, running errands or going to wine tastings or putting the smack down on the h8ers and non-believers.

ymmv (merde! stp!)

True story, I met a lady in the big easy last spring, at a health care conference. She wore a red bandana (or was it blue?) and took me for a ride on her harley. Good times!

What do you think about men in top hats? That may be my next purchase......

Obviously, hats aren't trendy, but I've seen guys pull off these hats:

cotton, wool, or cashmere borsalino/capas/newsboy (biz casual),
wool houndstooth or herringbone walking hat (biz casual, but more style-y)
wool/fur trooper (cold weather)
cotton fisherman or train conductor (casual)

I am hatless, and commando, in the corner office, with a crystal goblet filled with a 98 Chateau St. Michelle Cold Creek vinyard Cab and some truffles pondering potential career suicide in 2009. In a good way. Maybe.

Cheers!

I wear a hat not unlike that when I"ll be around dozens of nasty shitting penguins.
