As soon as you said it, I dropped Mazdas from the list of cars I was considering, and ignored all further posts on the subject. Besides, I thought you were a boy who just looks like Jennifer Aniston.

When I posted this, I believe I was referring to Mobil 1. As I recall, it was cold and slippery.

Yeah, but did it protect your sensitive parts from grinding after repeated wear and usage?

I could never ignore you. I loved you in "The Good Girl."

I wasn't trying to suggest that you weren't the first to bring it up, just that Flinty really hit the nail on the head, I thought.

From what I understand, it's not just an intermittent or occasional problem; it's the kind of thing that definitely will happen and everyone knows it. Because of the seal design and the stress on it, you basically _have_ to have the engine taken apart and rebuilt every 50,000 miles or so. There's no way around it. And it's expensive and time-consuming.

So, yes, you were the first to bring up the problem, but it's not a problem like other car problems are. It's a problem like winter is: it's coming there's nothing you can do about it, and it might really suck.

Hell, I don't know, maybe they fixed it. The new cars sure look sweet, although word is that they're kind of wimpy until you really rev them out. I'm saying that you shouldn't get a 1994 RX-7.

UPDATE (POLL) 25-30k pre owned sports sedan decision

Hmmm, tough choices. Assuming the used cars are in decent condition, I'd pick in this order:

1. 1998 BMW e39 540 Sport 6spd. Still a good looking design, great power, handling, room, comfort, everything. Insurance probably not bad either.

2. 2001.5-2002 Audi S4. By all accounts a screamer. Maintenance may be an issue, but when it runs, it should be a lot of fun. Lots of aftermarket performance parts too.

3. 2003 Infiniti G35 6MT sedan. A brand new car w/ warranty, good service, and car of the year awards (along with coupe). Still has a lot of pep, and again, Turbos and superchargers are being designed, some that may be suitable for the sedan.

4. 2001 BMW e46 330I sport. Solid choice, but a dime a dozen. Still a nice car though.

5. 2002 Audi A4 3.0. This is a great car too, and by ncs's account, a fun one to drive. However, this opinion is offset by my friend's experience, in which he is always bringing it to the shop for some mystery repairs. Maybe he's just cursed though. I'm told the interior is very nice for the price, and it's a strong car. Also a lot of aftermarket stuff.

Good luck!

Flinty
Thanks Flinty. Seeing how the board is off topic and that I have been in the land of goo goo gah gah for the past 2 months (Read: very “GREEN” new dad also) -I thought I would post a delayed update to my inquiry from a few months ago.

I live in a relatively warm climate so all wheel drive was not much of a consideration. For me it boiled down to the s4 and the 540. I drove both and ultimately decided on a 2000 540 6spd with 39,000 miles.

Now for the update. I took delivery a few short weeks ago. Beautiful car until it was transported open container. To make a long horrible story short, the truck driver dropped the lower gate on the trunk lid! (Then tried to hide the dent and damage with grease and a dremmel tool! Yes, that’s right, rotary grinder!) Lesson learned, don’t pinch pennies when shipping a vehicle. Another lesson, don’t trust special Jimmie, he drops things on cars! In any event, thank you for all of the helpful responses.

Wow.

Where, by the way, was that shot, I wonder? Did they back the cars out of the factory in Dearborn, grab a camera, and go?

I must have watched that 20 times last night, with the sound on the computer turned all the way up. Anyone know how to download the video?
