Terrible Tragedy
 

Husband and Mother of Federal Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow found slain in her home. Killings may be related to Judge Lefkow's decision against white supremacist Matthew Hale's "church" in a trademark dispute. Hale is currently awaiting sentencing after being convicted for plotting to kill Judge Lefkow.

Very fair judge and a nice lady. Sympathies to her and her family.

Wow. I read about finding bodies, which is ooky, but not much more. It's far worse when those bodies are your husband and mom.

Probably Kirkland, Sidley, Mayer Brown, Winston, MWE, maybe Jenner.

Other firms probably BIGLAW but not the "big Chicago firms" include Sonnenschein, KMZR, Schiff, LBB, maybe NGE.

Big names in the Chicago midlaw bunch are Sachnoff, D'ancona (they merged with somebody), Arnstein, Chapman and Wildman.

Then you've got Skadden, Latham, J&G, GCD, Baker & McKenzie and Jones Day, but those are just big firms in Chicago, not Chicago firms.

I am sure that I am missing a bunch and misclassifying some firms as Chicago firms or not Chicago firms.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Baker & McKenzie should be considered a Chicago firm.

Also, on the list of big firms in Chicago... DLA Piper etc. etc. etc. etc. has a pretty big presence in Chicago AFAICT.

Baker is a Chicago firm. DLA Piper is partly a Chicago firm; one of it compnents, Rudnick & Wolfe, was a local firm.

I guess Baker is a Chicago firm again, but it turned into such a joke when they had all these little offices absolutely everywhere, and its reputation really suffered, so now it's kind of a different animal. I worked on a transaction against (but it was a pretty friendly, form transaction) with some Chicago Baker people once, and they were terrible. Really bad. Nice people, but clueless and not very motivated.

How big was Rudnick & Wolfe? Given that the DLA firm is something like 2000 lawyers now, it's not really much of a Chicago firm if only a few hundred were at Rudnick.

It and Piper were about the same size when they merged. I think each had around 400-500 lawyers. I think Rudnick was more in a growth mode, and the general feeling was that it was the stronger player than Piper. I have no real idea how DLA plays into the mix.

Starting to look like it was a disgruntled and probably crazy pro se litigant who killed Judge Lefkow's husband and mother rather than white supremacists...

Sentenced to 18 months probation, $10k fine and 150 hrs. of community service. Multiple civil suits pending.

He was represented by a friend of mine, who opened his own shop in the last year or two and has had a run of high profile clients.

there was a report somewhere or other this morning (Suntimes.com or chicagotribune.com or the local msnbc page) that said they already have a matching DNA pattern, and I suspect the firing pattern on the recovered gun will in short order turn up as a match with the one used in the homicides.

They pulled DNA from the cigarettes in the sink supposedly.
