Not I. I am not a Kelly McGillis fan. Not only does she look manly, I always thought that she looked OLD, somehow. Take Top Gun, for instance. Maverick, Goose, et al. are all mid to late 20's. McGillis, on the other hand, looks like she's about 40 (NTTAWWT, unless you're supposed to be a 20-something sex goddes/aerospace engineer chick).

Subtext, Alex. Obviously she couldn't be too hot -- so as not to threaten the aforementioned homoerotic tension between and among Maverick, Goose, and IceMan. That's why the sexless Meg Ryan was cast as the woman who would say "take me to be or lose me forever." You did see Goose turn back and wink at Mav when she said that, didn't you?

Cruising the IMDB, I checked out the status of The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie (finished filming, to be released two weeks before Episode 3, whose trailer, btw, got me all giddy (see Geek comment above)).

The cast:

Arthur Dent -- Martin Freeman, from The Office. I've not seen the Office, but I hear it's good, and only a Brit could be in this role.

Ford Prefect -- Mos Def. Woo hoo!! He has the right level of coolness, and I give my wholehearted approval.

Trillian -- Zooey Daschanel. Sister from Almost Famous. I liked her bit role then, don't know much of her work, but Ok...

Zaphod Beeblebrox -- Sam Rockwell. I can't think of a more perfect casting decision.

And, oddly...

Marvin -- Warwick Davis, aka the midget out of Willow, will be voicing the most depressed robot in the universe. Ok.

uh, she was supposed to be old. That was the point of the role.

But the best deconstruction of Top Gun ever was in an otherwise awful terrible movie called Sleep With Me. Quinten Tarantino played the guy deconstructing the movie. Given the godawfulness of the rest of the movie, I can only assume Tarantino wrote the monologue. I cut and paste, so you don't have to see the movie.

• SID: You want subversion on a massive level. You know what one of the greatest fucking scripts ever written in the history of Hollywood is? Top Gun.
  
  DUANE: Oh, come on.
  
  SID: Top Gun is fucking great. What is Top Gun? You think it's a story about a bunch of fighter pilots.
  
  DUANE: It's about a bunch of guys waving their dicks around.
  
  SID: It is a story about a man's struggle with his own homosexuality. It is! That is what Top Gun is about, man. You've got Maverick, all right? He's on the edge, man. She's like, "What the fuck, what the fuck is going on here?" Next scene, next scene you see her, she's in the elevator, she is dressed like a guy. She's got the cap on, she's got the aviator glasses, she's wearing the same jacket that the Iceman wears. She is, okay, this is how I gotta get this guy, this guy's going towards the gay way, I gotta bring him back, I gotta bring him back from the gay way, so I'll do that through subterfuge, I'm gonna dress like a man. All right? That is how she approaches it.
  
  Okay, now let me just ask you—I'm gonna digress for two seconds here. I met this girl Amy here, she's like floating around here and everything. Now, she just got divorced, right? All right, but the real ending of the movie is when they fight the MIGs at the end, all right? Because he has passed over into the gay way. They are this gay fighting fucking force, all right? And they're beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And it's over, and they fucking land, and Iceman's been trying to get Maverick the entire time, and finally, he's got him, all right? And what is the last fucking line that they have together? They're all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, "Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!" And what does Maverick say? "You can ride mine!" Swordfight! Swordfight! Fuckin' A, man!

OK, now that I've gone back and checked (hi RP!), you were the one fawning over Mimi Rogers.

And you're right about Kelly, she looks older than she claims to be. RP may be right - it's the dental work. Bad caps on McGillis and deMornay might be the cause of the manliness.

That is totally brilliant. It reminds me of the time I over-analyzed Dante's Peak and temporarily convinced the Mr. that it was a good movie.

Pretty cool analysis. Sounds like Tarantino, but I can only be convinced of Q's impact on the script if he immediately followed this monologue by pulling out a revolver the size of his left leg and shooting the shit out of either a criminal, street scum, or a vampire.

There was a group in college that swore by it, but since they called themselves "Druids" and met in the woods late at night and wore cloaks all the time (and were otherwise completely fucking paigow), I didn't take an interest in it.
