NEW YORK - CNN suspended commentator Robert Novak indefinitely after he swore and walked off the set Thursday during a debate with Democratic operative James Carville.

The exchange during CNN’s “Inside Politics” came during a discussion of Florida’s Senate campaign. CNN correspondent Ed Henry noted when it was through that he had been about to ask Novak about his role in the investigation of the leak of a CIA officer’s identity.

A CNN spokeswoman, Edie Emery, called Novak’s behavior “inexcusable and unacceptable.” Novak had apologized to CNN, and CNN was apologizing to viewers, she said.

I would love to have seen that.

“We’ve asked Mr. Novak to take some time off,” she said.

Carville and Novak were both trying to speak while they were handicapping the GOP candidacy of Katherine Harris. Novak said the opposition of the Republican establishment in Florida might not be fatal for her.

“Let me just finish, James, please,” Novak continued. “I know you hate to hear me, but you have to.”

Carville, addressing the camera, said: “He’s got to show these right wingers that he’s got a backbone, you know. It’s why the Wall Street Journal editorial page is watching you. Show ’em that you’re tough.”

“Well, I think that’s bull---- and I hate that,” Novak replied. “Just let it go.”

As moderator Henry stepped in to ask Carville a question, Novak walked off the set.

I called her and she seemed surprised when she answered the phone. It was really weird. When you are not speaking in you native tongue the telephone is especially hard because you can't get any other signals as to what the person is trying to say. I don't know how much of that was going on or she just really just not into me. I asked her when her next night open was and she told me Wednesday. But then I hard trouble pinning her down about wednesday. I told her that she seemed pretty aprehensive and if she didn't want to go we didn't have to but she said she wanted to go. It was hard to get her to talk. Although we talked for a while about other stuff. She asked me to tell her about myself so I did.

I told her that I was going to get reservations but she asked if I really had to do that. I said it would be a good idea and its not like you really have to show up. Finally she said that Wednesday is a long time away so she would call me back. She was insistent about calling me. Kind of sounded like a "don't call us we will call you".

This one is really hard to figure out. I guess we will just have to wait and see if she calls. I screwed up by letting the ball land in her court but I just kind of fell into the trap.

PS: You can't "screw anything up" in dating/hooking up by making what you perceive to be a strategic gaffe. You can charm a girl who’s attracted to you but thinks you’re a dick or is wary of you. You can endear yourself to a girl and slowly create a relationship. But you can’t make a girl who isn’t interested interested. If she’s not curious about you from the get go, cut bait.

I guess what I'm saying is, don't beat yourself up about the strategic fuck up. Its not you; its her. Well... actually, that’s not true. It is you. But its nothing you did on the phone, so you got that going for you...

I'm sure it works the same way in the other direction. One phone call is never going to make or break anything. As long as you don't get all "Swingers" on someone's ass, no strategy makes a difference in the long run. You're either into each other, or you're not. You can't force someone's feelings; I just can't improve on what you said.

If we ever have an award for "Most Transformed"* you are the clear winner. I don't think anyone else would come close.
