Part of why the tax cuts have such a modest economic impact is that they went to the affluent, who spend them in ways with minimal multipliers.

If the money goes to the minimum wage worker, they buy food and rent housing with it. If it goes to union labor, they buy houses, cars, and education. If it goes to the wealthy, it's pretty much going to some variation on hookers and blow.

Anyone with interviewing etiquette/rules in their background? We represent a company that does military work. That company can only let US Citizens see its tech. I interviewed an immigrant earlier this week, and realized i needed to ask the "are you a citizen" question. Of course given the current climate it felt a shitty thing to do, and also I wasn't sure if the question violated some anti-discrimination rules? I had a super valid reason to ask, but that doesn't always matter.

2. This right here is the elegant little explanation of why inequality is a problem.

I still don't know why even left-leaning media outlets ask the stupid question, "Is inequality really a problem?" Uh, yes. How can it not be one?

If we have learned anything in the last few years, surely it is that many people are more interested in securing their own status relative to others.

If you are doing non-trivial amounts of work which must be staffed by citizens, I can't believe you are going to have trouble for asking people if they are citizens.

I have spent far more time on HR issues lately than I expected. For example, we give employees three floating holidays a year, which they get on day one and which do not roll to the next year. A employee who left asked to be paid for his unused holidays, which struck me as audacious, but outside counsel seems to think he's right. This seems wrong to me, since the holidays do not accrue as one works, like vacation days do.

Hookers and blow have a multiplier too. Probably a relatively high one as they're probably spending their money (at least the hookers and low level dealers).

The typical low multiplier issue is someone who already has enough to consume what they want will save/invest instead of consume. That can be good for the stock market and stimulative in a high rate environment or to the extent the issue is a lack of funds to borrow for investment, but it does nothing for a demand problem.

Plus, the tariffs are taxes that counteract the tax cuts.

Adder is correct for once, since the money has been given to someone who is low-income.

I know some companies deal with this whenever possible not at hiring but at assignment; there are inevitably some positions where it's just necessary to screen at hiring.

It's a really touchy issue with subsidiaries of foreign companies and at the point tech companies get purchased by foreign companies.

I'm just going to make a notation in your file: "low budget hookers"

Asking to be paid for earned* but not used holidays is “audacious”? Jesus, Ty, you really are a sellout to The Man. Perhaps this should be your new avatar:

*Yes, they were “earned” - on day one, maybe. Would you demand repayment if your former employee had taken them and left before the end of the year? You probably would, you greedy** bastard.

** Isn’t it Alana-ic, don’t you think?

Hey, I took a lot of my econ courses with Marxists.

I may spell it "labour" as much as "labor" as a result, but in my mind labour and capital are very different, and labour needs to be further subdivided into physical and mental labour.

If money goes to someone rich enough that they aren't going to change their consumption, then it does just go into a bank account. I just don't believe there's much difference between union and non-union infrastructure projects in that regard. I am a fan of unions for other reasons, some of which Sebby has pointed to.

2. ty bought me dinner in SF and it was basically at a restaurant build into a sanitary sewer- food was good, but the stench was ummm distracting to say the least- but if he took ME there, someone he was trying to impress, I cannot imagine what horror awaits his factotum at their annual end of year "celebration" lunch.
