I am sick to death about talking about this and having it always turn into this big blame game. At this point, it doesn't matter who is responsible for the fact that the levees failed or who is reponsible for the fact that 4 days have gone by and relief efforts haven't been effective enough. What matters now is that the situation get fixed. That those still in need of evacuation get evacuated. That supplies get to those who need them. That decisions about rebuilding be made rationally and thoughtfully. And that some semblance of law and order be returned to the areas where things seem to have gotten out of control.

And (cue KumBaYa) each of us should be trying to figure out what we can do to help rather than taking issue with what is being done or what hasn't been done already.

In conjunction with my kid's school, I am thinking of temporarily adopting/sponsoring a displaced child for the next school year to come and live with our family and go to my kid's school, which is a blame-free zone.

Agree completely. I hope you don't think I was pointing a finger with that addition to the quote - my point was just to respond to the "using lethal force" concern and indicate that I think those who are going in now (the Guard) are going there to help, not to kill people needlessly.

Call me a pinko, but I think that magical flying carpets should be given away for free. I am sick to death of the price gouging that occurs in the sale and distribution of magical flying carpets. I would like some sort of governmental agency to investigate this.

A really low-impact thing to do is to go to your local humane society this weekend and adopt a pet. There is a large group of humane societies that are travelling to the gulf coast to transport abandonned animals out of the area, and those humane societies are going to need room in their facilities for all the new arrivals. Adopt a kitten. Name her Katrina. And feel good about it.
