Why, yes, we do. Sometimes. The point I was trying to make is that it is possible to allow for religious differences in enforcing values, and still punish activity that goes beyond cultural values and enters the realm of the criminal.

Any suggestions?
Um.. if your friend and his general are for real, they should have no trouble getting op eds published in any number of newspapers (and their websites).

But I am sure Penske actually is highly influential.

One wonders if their wives are equally excited about the prospect of sharia family law.

Apropos of which, I recommend a novel by Monica Ali, Brick Lane. There's been a stink in London over the filming of a movie made from the book -- a number of immigrants object to the depiction of them in the movie and threatened violence against the filming. I have half a blog post about the dispute, and someday will get around to finishing it.

Yes, but that only changed a small, wee scrap of mostly desert that no one wanted anyway...

Clinton critisized GHWB for his actions in Somalia, his giving China its MFN status and for his nation building in Haiti. And then when he took office, he continued all three polcies.

When the January 17,1994 earthquake hit, the 118, the 405, the 5 and other freeways in the Los Angeles area had huge sections that had totally collapsed. The first estimates were a minimum of three years to fix the roads--and at an outrageous cost. This would destroy the Southern California economy, jobs lost, businesses closed and an exodus that had not happened in California before.

Instead of raising taxes, bemoaning his bad luck, not blaming the Federal government for not acting quickly enough,, Gov. Pete Wilson, like the Marine he will always be, took action.

By Executive Order he temporarily ended many environmental laws that were only meant to slow the building process and to make it more costly. He put aside the phony "prevailing wage" laws that are meant to provide unions with tribute for their donations to hack politicians. Then he did what private industry does--he gave a bonus to construction firms that finished ahead of schedule. Most government contracts have penalties for finishing late. Wilson understood that the public was being inconvenienced and business could not operate without a solid freeway system. Instead of three years, almost all the needed work was completed in eight months, and the most needed in less than three months. Businesses made money, union workers and non union workers got paid premium wages, yet the State of California saved money. It was a win win situation for all.

Instead of taking over 2 years to fix the 10 Freeway, it took 66 days. Here is an article written by Gov. Wilson on how he did it, http://www.opinionjournal.com/editor...l?id=110007252
Three shifts, working 24/7 made the completion in a little over two months, not two years! Reason magazine did a complete analysis of how Wilson repaired the freeways.
The whole state paid for this, which seems right. And yet Southern California will stick Northern California with the costs of the new Bay Bridge. Oh the humanity!

You aren't a very nice person are you. They are familiar with newspapers you idiot. They are trying to utilize the internet in ways that hasn't been done before. They seem to think that if they have some people posting on influential chat boards or Blogs that that may be one way to influence the national dialogue. A way that isn't currently being used. Doesn't seem that crazy to me. I just don't know where to send them.

Depends on what the constituency is. In Seattle increasingly, but army people don't play in this market. I am more touchy feely irl.

I am a bit incredulous that any senior military personnel would want to do this.

And, frankly, I don't know of anyplace that I would recommend posting. And certainly none that would be more influential than the major papers.
