I'm still mystified why they don't do the regular iPod in different colors. I have a white one, and I hate it. It's like putty grey computers: why, why, why??

Am I greedy because I want 30GB+ on a nano-sized thing?

1) Costs. Too many to stock and distribute. They'd always be out of the color you want. Go to colorware.com, and order one--it's like $25 or so.

2) No, unrealisitic. There's an actual hard drive in the full-sized iPod, whereas the nano is flash.

Interesting, but we have yet to see whether it requires another mac to be up and running, from which the media is streamed. if so, you might as well just use a mini. if, on the other hand, it can stream from a NAS or from a simple HDD, it becomes very interesting. Lets wait for Q1 2007.

and those are totally cool.

I'm getting my next one there, for sure.

The iPod is black. But you can't see much of it. Just the super cool, pebbled leather case.

The nano that I buy will be purely for running/workouts. I'm not really sure I need 8 gigs. Hell, I'm not sure that I need 4, but that seems reasonable to hold enough playlists to keep me interested for an hour or so while I try to distract myself into running just a little further.

Plus, I'm still toying with the Nike+ and I think it only works with the nano.

Indeed, nano only. Considering it myself (though not with Nike shoes); let me know if you pull the trigger. Trying to decide if I'd rather have Nike +, a Polar hr monitor w/ foot pod, of Garmin GPS (with our w/o hrm).

Oh, that's pretty good. I have mine in an awful spongy grey thing because then when I drop it, it doesn't smash into bits. But that red color might even match my laptop.

Yes. It just shuffles the songs in whatever playlist you have loaded. Or you can play the playlist straight.

If you do playlists right, the shuffle is enough even for Penske to finish a triathlon.

I'll let you know. The odds of it happening are great if I end up buying the nano.

My bottom of the line hr monitor was eaten by a puppy in the teething stages, and I haven't bothered to replace it. The Polar people said that it happens quite a bit, and I think they have a strap replacement program if I can find all the pieces to send back to them.

I have a leather In Case Nano holder that ilike a lot. Black case, black Nano, if that matters. I was going to post a pic, but it turns out the "in case" brand is not that easy to google. Bad for them, I guess.

On an unrelated topic, since this board is active today, we just got a new Directv DVR hooked up last night and I'm having a bit of trouble adjusting from my Tivo mindset. Have people found the non-Tivo DVR's to be easy to use? The season pass equivalent seems a bit harder to learn and I'm finding that this DVR doesn't hold the tv schedule for as far in advance as the Tivo did, so, for example, I'm not able to input America's Next Top Model yet (the show doesn't show up in the search list) even though the first episode is Sept. 20th.

Finally, do you have to do something extra in order to get the HD stations from CBS, Fox, etc.? When we go into HD Channels, we can't get the feed from CBSE or FOXW, etc.

Gracias.

Correct. But the ipod shuffle really never has to be recharged. Perfect for 12 hour car rides or 12 hour plane rides. Ipod NANO dies in about 2 hours.

New ones seem to have improved battery life.

Nike+. It's a dodad that you put in your shoe that talks to your nano. Tells you how long you've run, how far, what your pace is. It'll also download the data of your runs so you can keep track of progress without having to write anything down.

This really doesn't help you, but I've had the same issue w/ the DirecTV dvr. We have TiVo in the living room (same box we've had for years) and recently got the DirecTV box for the bedroom. I really don't like the DirecTV one. So much less user friendly than TiVo.

You have to call fucking Directv and tell them you'd like to receive those channels. Why they don't just give them to you is a mystery to me. As long as you've paid for the HD and you've paid for the "local" (fucking cable monopoly bastards) channels, they should just send you the fucking local HD channels.

eta you will only be able to get CBSW not CBSE, same with NBC and ABC and FOX.

Sorry, late. Thanks for the links. Mr. Practical thinks we should pay off the car instead (meanie), so Santa will have to bring me a new DC.

OK, new and probably stupid question....I know there is some sort of DVR machine thingie like TIVO that does not require any sort of subscription and isn't wired into any service - can anyone name it?

What is the model of this phone? I will be in the market for a new phone, probably with Verizon in the next month or two. I need suggestions. My current phone (a cheap Samsung picture phone) sucks monkey balls* and I don't want another sucky phone for the next 5 or so years. I'm changing to Verizon assuming that Mr. Man's new fully subsidized work phone/blackberry is on Verizon. Otherwise no limitations (other than my PDA and phone will remain separate devices). I really liked my old Nokia phone but Samsung has sucked... Awful text messaging.

Thoughts?

For years I resisted Nike shoes.....now I like them. The less competitive/slower I got the more the lure of Nike worked on me.

I'm also interested if you decide to go the Nike route. I have a 2 gig nano, bought in the spring. It holds 500 songs or 2 days' worth, theoretically. For me, it's plenty for finding something to listen to while running. I wouldn't mind more space either so would buy the 8 that's now available.

I bought a holder which is not dashing looking but highly practical. It is foam and has a clip on it. You can attach it to your shorts or on the armband it comes with. I always use the clip-on with various kinds of workout bottoms. It is light enough that there is no tug.http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US...7526322_rc.jpg

I have one. It's pretty accurate and very easy to use. Every time you plug in your nano, you get an upload of your mileage, time and speed. Plus whenever you run your fastest mile, Lance Armstrong comes on and tells you "Quick they're on to you, get a full blood transfusion."

Of course, the only limitation is that you have to wear the NIKE shoes that you put the transmitter in so if you run at work and at home, better have that figured out.

Back in '91 just before I turned semi-pro, I bought my first pair of Nikes. Huaraches (sic). Wore em half dozen times and Got awful shin splits. Didn't wear Nikes again until about 03. Now I like em. No shin splits. But also not semi, quasi or otherwise pro.

It depends on the TV. I've played ipod video on a 17in. flat panel (plasma) computer screen, and it's watchable but grainy. Anything larger would be shitty quality.
