I believe I spent a delightful night at the Best Western in Pismo Beach about exactly a year ago. The shore is pretty steep right there, but the hotel is right above the water.

You may be looking for something classier than a Best Western, but it usually works for me.

eta: There are two Best Westerns in Pismo Beach, and I may have been at the other one, the Shelter Cove Lodge.

No, but get a fucking grip. Not so much you directly, gwinc, since it sounds like you have a handle on it...but the other cry at my desk folks....there is so much stress and dealing with everyone's unique life situation you just have to fucking deal with it and move forward. If you dwell you make yourself nuts.
