This may already have been posted, but I couldn't find it in a cursory search. From a review of a book that may have been written by Atticus and dtb:

'There are many possible reasons for the tremendous success of "Eats, Shoots & Leaves," a spritely volume that leads the reader through the valley of the shadow of comma splice; refers to the apostrophe as "our long-suffering little friend"; makes a rousing case for the semicolon's usefulness in, among other things, "calling a bunch of brawling commas to attention"; and describes Woodrow Wilson's inexplicable visceral hatred of the hyphen, which he called — spectacularly undermining his own argument — "the most un-American thing in the world."'

'Pedants may be born, or they may be made, but Ms. Truss [the author] — who prefers "stickler," if pressed — has been one for a long time.'

Fucking IT (Rant)

Dearest IT,

I know you are here to help and that you do try but........

1. "We need to escalate that issue to the Network folks who all leave at 4pm. It should be fixed in 24 hours" is not an acceptable answer. I need access to that file on the network NOW. It's ridiculous that I should wait 24 hours for someone to check Active Directory. Give me the rights and I'll do it myself.

2. Get rid of that horrible elevator-pop Musak. Sitting here listening to that shit while I'm on hold is really driving up my crankiness meter.

3. I know you didn't write the application, but Lotus Notes SUCKS!

4. Why can't all my applications be available from home (can't you provide me with licenses for software installation?). Dialing in on my laptop is quicker than working on this POS you issued me.

Carry on.

Anyone else conjur up an image of Victor Borge*? Or am I dating myself? Bilmore?

*Victor Borge had a bit where he read a simple story and had cool sounds for all the punctuation marks.

Media Jackals

"The tabloid New York Post brought in a handwriting expert, Taylor Morgan, to analyse Spears's signature on the marriage license and he decided that the marriage was not consumated.

"She wasn't feeling physical," Morgan said, explaining that the "y" in Britney indicated she was "not in a sexy state of mind.""

--

Thank goodness for the fourth estate. That is all.

Link to article about what happened with Britney's mini-marriage

--

edited to add:

"So just what was going through Britney Spears' mind when she took Alexander as her first husband? Pop psychologist Dr. Ruth Westheimer says the Las Vegas wedding smells of a publicity stunt gone bad.

"The decision of commitment and being together is a serious one, and for someone like that to make it into a cheap happening over a few hours makes a Jewish mother like me very sad," the 75-year-old Westheimer said. "Rather than a cry for help, maybe what it is is a cry for a spanking."

Other shrinks noted that her quickie marriage came on the heels of her live-TV kiss of Madonna and her breakup with Justin Timberlake, who later blabbed about bedding her.

Celebrity therapist Dr. Robert Butterworth said Spears' decision to marry a childhood friend may mean she's having a tough time trusting people who know her only as a superstar."

I'm sticking with the she got butt-wasted and did something she otherwise wouldn't have remembered in the morning theory.

This might be the only post on the FB that brought back such a horrible memory that I got up to get a drink.

Women are oddly sensitive. When I was in high school, I remember some girl telling me she was abused because of some verbal shit her parents pulled on her. I could barely contain my laughter. Fuck, there was a fair number of kids in our school who were regularly bruised or burned by their parents.

no, they're too busy bitching that available men are beneath them. And pissed that their careers do nothing to compensate for being fat, ugly or past their expiration date.

This always pisses me off. If you don't like the top, say so before we start.

I agree. Which makes it difficult for me to reveal to the Board that I have it on very good authority that Stephen Root (Jimmy James of NewsRadio fame), while a tremendous comic actor, is not a naturally funny individual.

But here's what I am listening to in my car:
Jeff Buckley: Complete Live at Sin-E
Outkast: Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
The Meat Purveyors: All Relationships are Doomed to Fail, More Songs About Buildings and Cows, and Sweet in the Pants (Bloodshot Records is having a sale.)
The Sadies: Pure Diamond Gold, Tremendous Efforts, and Precious Moments
Buena Vista Social Club - Soundtrack
Etta James: Tell Mama: The Complete Mussel Shoals Sessions
Nickel Creek: Nickel Creek
Hem: Rabbit Songs (which Atticus might want to look into purchasing now that all the women on the Board know what to expect once The Trinity Sessions starts.

My first impression was that it bore a striking resemblance to the Vietnam Memorial in DC, with the sweeping black triangles, and then I read this in the story:

"The jury, which included Vietnam Veterans Memorial designer Maya Lin and the widow of a trade center victim, took eight months to pick the winning design from 5,201 submissions."

Hmmmm...

Otherwise, I think it's a good design. And I think the people protesting it would protest anything. I know the lost of loved ones makes for an emotionally raw state, but their statements were really uncalled for. It is more important to have a memorial soon rather than fight over making the memorial perfect for forever.

Back to the Vietnam connection -- when that memorial was proposed, it was pretty roundly damned by veterans groups on the same basis. I don't think anyone who has actually been there would still maintain that it is sterile. I watched otherwise stoic middle aged men fall to their knees weeping there. I suspect that the Trade Center memorial will be similar.

Are four of those young perkies, probably attached to some supermodel who loves midwest lawyers no doubt, the equivalent of two hanging from a PP or an RP since we are about twice as old?
