[spoiler space: math is hard]
2) To back that up, given that around 6-8% of regular season games go into overtime, I calculated the likelihood that we would see 0 superbowls (out of 43) have an overtime if the percentages were the same. There is less than a 5% chance of that occurring, which using ordinary statistical assumptions means that the chances of the SB going into overtime are lower than for regular season games.

All very impressive. But I would prefer using the larger number of games as a guide, especially since I'm sure that if we had a more signficant number of Superbowl games to include in your calculus, the more the numbers would look like those of the regular season. Besides, I don't think the person who made up the rules took into account the oh-so-smaller likelihood of a Superbowl game not going to OT than a regular season game, when the rules were drafted.

If you can say that you wouldn't care which rule was applied if you had the same two numbers in your Superbowl box (and I'm not really sure if that's what you're trying to say with your statistical analysis), then I guess we just have different ideas on betting altogether.

Goddammit

Be happy you're fucking alive, people.

Some who were on the plane - brought down by a flock of geese after takeoff from La Guardia Airport on Jan. 15 - said the temporary tease of first-class perks is for the birds.

"I think if you survive a plane crash, being upgraded permanently is a good gesture too," said Fred Berretta, 41, of Charlotte, NC, where the Airbus A320 was headed.

Manhattanite Tess Sosa, who escaped the sinking plane with her husband and two small children, thought the airline was too focused on self-congratulations - and "they want to exonerate themselves as much as they can."

"They are happy they had such amazing results, and they applaud themselves, and then give us a small token?" she said. "That's how I take it."

The airline announced the upgrades and other perks last week in a letter Sosa described as "frigid" at best.

CEO Doug Parker wrote that passengers would get "coveted" Chairman's Preferred status - but only until March 2010.

The membership gives each passenger and a companion first-class domestic travel when seats are available, one upgrade to Europe or Hawaii, choice seats and priority check-in.

"We would very much like to see you on a future US Airways flight soon," Parker wrote.

. . .

The airline earned some passengers' praise for quickly sending out $5,000 checks for lost luggage and other expenses. And the company said passengers will be able to make claims for more expenses in the future.

A spokesman for the US Airways said passengers did not have to waive their rights to sue in order to accept the checks or the Chairman's Preferred membership. Some have already contacted lawyers.

Barry Leonard, of Charlotte, argued that "US Airways has bent over backwards to help everyone on the flight."

At La Guardia yesterday, other US Airways travelers were shocked by the airline's lowballing.

"You're going to crash me into the water, and you're going to tell me all I get is an upgrade?" asked Antonio Sales, 20, who was traveling with the University of South Carolina's track team. "That's more of an 'OK, you're not dead, I'll give you something to hold on to.' It's not enough at all."

Teammate Gabrielle Glenn, 20, was more blunt: "That's it. They should sue."

Watch out, sometimes you ask for drunk-before-breakfast Hank and end up getting bitter trolling Hank.

I'd suggest you avoid criticism and instead send Hank something from likker.com. Better to be positive.

If any of them actually hurt their back in the landing, USAir will end up mad that Chesley didn't just crash the damn plane.

I was on a train that crashed. A hundred people with broken bones etc. The engineers both died, and supposedly one of them made a heroic act that saved passengers right at the end. My family walked off with no problem, except my wife has emotional issues WRT public transit now. Of course, she married me so lord knows how stable she was to begin with.

We got notice there will be a class action. I told myself if we get a check I would send it to the widow of one of the engineers. I told myself it would be bad karma to take money for a crash we all walked away from.

5 years later, when we got the checks, I cashed them.

Class actions have a momentum that doesn't really require everyone to emotionally join in.

Yes, and in light of that, it was a nice gesture that I stopped wearing my conductor hat and making choo choo noises during our liaisons......
