Laptop...
 
I'm in the market for a new laptop (some variety of MacBook, natch) and I might end up getting a 1-year old Air from an acquaintance if it has 8 GB of RAM (required to run my design programs), but if that falls through I'm getting a new MacBook Pro from the Apple store. My question is -- should I buy the AppleCare if I go the new laptop route? I've always bought AppleCare because at some point I was advised that it made more sense for Apple products than that sort of insurance makes generally, but I'd sort of like to ditch that $249 expense if I won't regret it on day 366 of ownership. So tell me, smart lawyer types (and Hank)*, can I save a little cash? What do people here do on that front?

I never purchase these sorts of things for three primary reasons (1) I try not to break my electronics, and usually succeed and (2) given 1, I'd rather take the risk than pay to make it go away, and (3) the person selling me this "insurance" knows enough to price it significantly to his advantage.

The wife on the other hand seems to have issues with (1) so I'd think about it for her but still probably not do it.

Waste of money to buy it, or not worth the risk.

+1. In my experience electronics either work fine out of the box or they don't. If they don't it's under warranty. IF they do, then they break because of misuse/accident or theft. Apple Care is only for years 2 and 3, so you're paying $250 to insure a product that's already outdated by the time the insurance applies. By year 3 you could take that $250 and put it towards, the newer, faster, but cheaper model.

I've used AppleCare once on an ipad. I don't think that it was actually covered, but the Apple person took pity on my destroyed-in-the-wreck one-week-old ipad when I showed up at the Apple store with bruises and scrapes all over me and gave me a new one.

AppleCare does not cover kitty cats knocking over a glass of water on the laptop and destroying the motherboard. This is a lesson my sister just learned to the tune of $500. It was a very new macbook, so it was worth it to get fixed. So if you anticipate kitty cat / liquid calamities with your laptop, AppleCare is not the solution. The kitty cat has not apologized, but she did point out that she only has one eye, and depth perception is not her specialty. Plus, she's not a fan of the laptop.

Actually, the biggest purveyor of this idea in American culture was Herman Melville. He was particularly fond of pointing out the inherent moral superiority of the average cannibal as compared to the average American missionary.

Today, he'd be pilloried for an inadequate appreciation of American exceptionalism.
