Plane crash

Because I remember when there was the blackout in the NY/Boston area a couple of years ago and the first words out of anyone's mouth was "IT'S NOT A TERRORIST ACTION - IT WAS SOMEBODY'S FUCKUP AT CON-ED."

So is this what it has come to? Everytime anything happens, we jump to the conclusion that it's a terrorist?

How's the security in Russia? Is it like London, Heathrow where you have to walk past the guys with rifles, or is it like landing in Cancun?
YMMV on this one, but it's from the LA Times yesterday (and I helped with it before it was submitted for publication, though I wasn't credited):

Overheard somewhere on the campaign trail:

*

Thank you for coming to this invitation-only event. Dick Cheney and I are grateful for your support.

I want to talk to you today about those who want to deprive us of our liberty and way of life through violence and fear. You know what I'm talking about. I'm talking about terraces.

This administration has made fighting terraces our No. 1 priority to keep America safe. My national security team has told me that terraces not only produce violence and fear, but also fancy decorative plants with foreign-sounding names, which are not consistent with our values.

Yesterday in Ohio I spoke to a man who said he enjoys sitting on terraces. I told him to keep up the good work. We must all do our part to keep them immobile. We can't afford to let down our guard. Terraces are a problem found in our own backyards. Some of you told me you don't have a backyard. I think this is wrong. Thanks to the tax cuts I signed into law, more Americans than ever can afford backyards.

Some people say there are simply too many terraces, that we can't win this war. It's true that there are also lots of terraces in old European countries like France and Germany. But many of our newer allies, like Poland, don't have this problem. My father, the former president, says it has something to do with Soviet construction.

Sen. John McCain has told me he has no use for terraces. I was glad to hear it. He said it's too hot in Arizona. I told him, "John, I know wars can get hot. That's why I won't rest until we've won the war on terraces."

As I see it, the choice in this election is clear. For example, the media reported that my opponent has several terraces. His wife enjoys terraces in five languages. I take a different approach. As far as I know, there are no terraces at the ranch in Crawford, just a lot of brush that needs to be cleared. Dick told me he took care of the one terrace he knew of in Wyoming. I thanked him for the superb job he is doing.

My opponent has also raised questions about our strategy in going into Iraq. I am so happy to be able to tell you that there are now far fewer terraces in Iraq than there were under Saddam Hussein. Mission accomplished.

Ill. Sues Dave Matthews Band Over Bus Waste
Wednesday, August 25, 2004

CHICAGO — The state of Illinois sued the Dave Matthews Band (search) on Tuesday for allegedly dumping up to 800 pounds of liquid human waste from a bus into the Chicago River, dousing a tour boat filled with passengers.

If this thing survives SJ, Atticus thinks the precedent will let us Class action sue SS. People should start gathering damages proofs.

I have moved to Poland, where, interestingly, the In Your Pocket guides don't have a section discussing, or ads for, adult entertainment clubs, whereas they did in Vilnius, Riga, St. Petersburg and Moscow. I am attempting to find out if this means that they have no need for them because the chicks are easy here.

I can only speak for boarding a plane in Moscow, not the butt-fuck nowhere airport these flew out of, but it was a pretty typical put-your-bag-through-the-ex-ray-machine-and-walk-through-the-metal-detector thing. I didn't see much in the way of secondary screening or armed patrols. I have no idea how sensitive their machines are set. I have no idea what sort of perimeter security exists or how staff are screened. That said, its a pretty fucked-up country in some ways, with a lot of corruption and people open to bribery, and I suspect their airport security is no different.

At least the female swimmers have TITS.

Traveling from country to country, though, I have been exposed to some of the sports you don't see highlighted in America. Unsurprisingly, each country tends to show more of the sports that it is better in. I have been treated to an abnormal amount of shooting, judo, and handball (which is not the game like squash, but is basically water polo on land). I also learned that there is an event called the steeplechase that does not involve horses, but instead uses Kenyans (they won all three medals).

Be safe. Remember, what happens in Eastern Europe doesn't necessarially stay in Eastern Europe. Just because dinner and drinks are cheap, doesn't mean you get out easy.

His white-trashedness separates him from me, and I'm not klassy.

Question: should dark suits be worn to ALL interviews, or just the first one? Is light grey not an option? B/c I hate the cut of my charcoal suit, but Penske likes the cut of my jib.

I have worn grey to interviews, without problems.

Did anyone see the bronze medal match between the Aussies and the team B Americans? One of the Aussies severely fucked up her already aggravated shoulder in the middle of the second game, almost to the point where it was useless. She was in tears every time she moved it much. She and her partner rallied, won the game and forced a third game. The Americans did what they could to take advantage of her injury, but she was willing to sacrifice her arm to keep on going. Eventually the Americans won, but I was really impressed with how that Aussie stayed in the match and kept it competitive, despite her very obvious pain.

Again, bless TiVo.

Yes, provided there's still women's soccer or some adequately lust-worthy alternative.

If it's shot put and men's diving, then no.

Eastern Europe just hasn't been the same since Rocco invaded Poland, or so I heard somewhere.
