New SUV for Jewish MIL.

Thoes are all a bunch of good options, but I think that your MIL should consider what she wants. Is performance important? Luxury? Price? Ability to haul shit around? Until those decisions are made, it's pointless to try to pick from among such a broad segment.

She had considered the hybrid version, but the salesperson talked her out of it, saying that with the type of driving she does, the hybrid feature would not help her quest for higher mileage.

In the ~$40k range, what would you suggest? I thought that a diesel Toureg would be awesome for her, but it lists for about $60k. That's more than she cares to spend (and she'd be unlikely to find one that's been a demo model for on the cheap, I suspect). Perhaps the Infiniti QX45 or the Nissan Murano? Other ideas welcomed.
Acura MDX.

Hydrogen Hummer. Is that anything like when TM's girlfriend uses the mentholyptus?

To give you a sense of what she is looking for, she has had a demo model ES300 for years now. I think that she's had it for 7 years plus, and it has somewhere around 150k miles on it at this point. She likes its reliability, smooth ride, and relatively luxurious interior.

Performance is not very important to her, though she doesn't want something dog slow. Price is also important; she's interested in trying to pick up a demo model RX330, due to the discounted price, but would probably go for one that is new, if she couldn't find a demo.

She's interested in something that will let her haul gear and lots of luggage to help on trips up north to remodel and to the mid-Atlantic to visit. AWD is also something that she'd like.

Overall, she's trying to figure out if there are any alternatives to the RX330. (Well, I'm trying to figure that out. The dealer keeps giving her RX330s as loaners because they know that she's an easy mark.) So, I figured I'd seek recommendations for comparable vehicles in terms of size, ride, luxury, price, and fuel economy. She said that she doesn't want a wagon. I think that the MDX and XC90 are two good options. I think that the price premium for handling and performance in an X5 is too much, seeing what she's looking for. She'd probably also do well in a Ford Five Hundred, but I don't imagine that she would go for one of those.

You know, an option I had forgotten about is the Cadillac SRX. I showed her pictures and she said that she thought it looked cool.

I'm kind of liking the SRX too.

If all goes well, I may be buying one of these in the very near future:

I have a cousin who bought a loaded Chrysler Pacifica and loves it. Very comfortable, AWD, lots of toys and the price was very right. So far so good on the quality front, too, although I don't think he's planning on keeping it beyond 100k miles.

The SRX seems to be wildly overpriced to me. I'd defnitely get the Lexus instead.

Hey, at least we will be trading in our present ride. SB's "I need 3 cars" thing is rEcockulous.

I'm on my second 9-3 (first was a '99; now have an 02). Fun to drive, nice looking, and with the hatch, rEdiculoulsly functional. I've had no serious problems. Two things to watch for: if you don't have climate control, the heater dials have a bad habit of snapping. They fixed this somewhere between '99 and '02, but I'm not sure where. I've also had the computer display unit stop working (replaced under warranty). Enjoy.

I'm looking at 01's: one is an SE, the other is not (the SE has ACC and therefore wouldn't have the binding issue with the heater controls). The both have less than 30k miles, and both are CPO. I'm going to check them both out next week.

My first car was a 900T 3-door, on which I put more than 180k miles. It was an awesome car, right until the end, and I can't wait to get back into the Saab fold. I looked at the 9-3ss and it just doesn't do anything for me. Sure it's a great car, but, lacking the hatch, it just doesn't feel like a Saab should.
