Re: shallow music, try Fleet Foxes. Bought it in Sbux (Hi PPNYC!). Sounds like a soft version of My Morning Jacket, only without a really a good guitarist, and with really disjointed songs. But still catchy and interesting.

I'm actually surprised that the party in question had an ipod within 500 yards. From the description, it sounded like everything was on LP.

Here is another statement I would have a hard time debating, but I am going to guess that he has more songs than you and your college buddies are aware of.

Fleet Foxes is one of those bands that I hear quite a bit on Radio K. Yet, inexplicably, they have never caught my imagination? Hank? What is going on? I suppose I will take some comfort from the fact that I am becoming an Animal Collective fan based in part on Radio K airplay. And Animal Collective is basically the Beyonce of experimental psych-pop outfits.

If you would have said her Sasha Fierce, House of Deryon (or whatever) crap makes her annoying, your rant wouldn't seem so weird. But if having her over-produced, super stylized stuff played too much on the radio is the main factor, you're just saying you don't like pop music.

I don't think she's that hot. And I don't like her as much because, supposedly, when Destiny's Child first began, her father (their manager) would ask the other two girls to tan, would dye Beyonce's hair and do her makeup to play up how light-skinned she is. They still do this. It's kind of annoying. She also sings about being bootilicious and then does interviews where she admits starving herself so she can look right.

She (and Destiny's Child) has done some great songs. Lose My Breath comes to mind http://www.muvids.com/2_video_destin...lose_my_breath as does Me and My Girlfriend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDkt_vWmU5k (althought that's more Jay-Z*). She's an average actress, but she's a good performer.

*Who ripped off Tupac.

I definitely don't like pop music in general. But she annoys me because she's a purported pop singer who thinks she's an actress. She sucks at acting. And I don't care if someone is a good "performer" (to the extent that the latter means fancy lights and choreographed dancing).

It's the same reason I don't like Jennifer Lopez. I don't like people who cross over into another medium when the only reason that person had the opportunity to do so was because of success in another. Jennifer Lopez is not a bad actress. But she sucks at singing.

Finally, I'm not annoyed by pop singers who are clearly talented. I don't like Xtina's music, but she can fucking sing. So could Whitney Houston. And I respect that.

ETA my answer for Hank: It's because she's swarthy.

I don't know if they've caught your imagination or not, but I kind of enjoy them.

Not too much, but enough.

but it seems you could form an opinion re: fleet foxes where you couldn't about Beyonce. just because you haven't found Fleet Foxes to be this year's melt banana does not mean your opinions haven't been changed by the airplay.

Fair enough. Do you apply it to everything? Models who turn to acting? Comedians who become actors? Comedians who become serious actors (or is that close enough)? You must be thoroughly annoyed with Joaquin Phoenix right now. Bruce Willis? Patrick Swayze? Don Johnson? Good Lord, I could go on forever.

I mostly agree because I think it sucks when people who have worked so hard to become actors (for instance) are denied roles because some rapper has his own fan base and will automatically bring in a certain number of people. But there are exceptions. Some people are multi-talented, so I assume they don't fall into the annoying category.

I'm more annoyed with established actors who work too fucking much and never give anyone else a chance--like Samuel L. Jackson. Does he really have to play every over the hill bad motherfucker role the industry has to offer? Jesus Christ.

Or actors who play every fucking role in a movie--like Eddie Murphy. Yes, Eddie. We know you can play all sorts of fat people. Nobody gives a shit anymore. Now pick one role and hire somebody.

In Beyonce's case, has she ever purported to be a "real" actor? I think I have only seen her in Austin Powers (not something that requires real acting chops) and movies about singers (that involved singing).

It seems like you are back to your hypothesis that, if I am exposed to a certain music, I will become more informed about that music.

The Wrestler

I have not been around much and didn't watch the Academy Awards and don't know who won what, but I did watch the Wrestler last weekend (thank you bittorrent) and it's now one of my favorite movies ever. Just fucking awesome.

I have seen Pi but I don't think I have seen any other Darren Aronofsky movies. Do you think I would like Requiem for a Dream if I liked the Wrestler? For some reason I have never seen it.

I suspect yes. I quite liked Requiem for a Dream, but I tend to like the bleak druggie genre. It also has some rather explicit scenes involving Jennifer Connolly.

That said, I didn't love the Wrestler. Good, but not really breaking much new ground (basically I agree with whoever it was (TM?) that critiqued it earler).

Even at the end of a night of drinking? I wouldn't even know what else to play at 4 am.
