"Whatever. She still attacks me unprovoked, and she still is petty and divorced." Leaving aside whether I am petty or not, for her to use the word "divorced" as an insult to a woman (note that there are many divorced men on the board whom she does not insulted in this fashion) is disturbing. Disturbing simply because if she thinks this way, others do. And she has a little education. Whatever. I'm a feminist and this bugs me. End of earnestness. |

The new wife felt it was necessary--a year later--to return the letter and to remind my friend that she (the wife) had won and my friend had lost. She flaunted the baby, and the marriage, and the man. She said that the pretty girls always win, and that my friend should lose weight if she ever wanted to find a man. She mocked and belittled and degraded my friend's previous love for her ex-, and she was mean and cruel and lording about it. The same day my friend posted the letter, the same day I volunteered to beat the shit out of this horrible woman on my friend's behalf, I checked in here and found ppnyc was mocking RB for being fat and barely for being unmarried and dismissing the notion that she was immune from divorce, pain or heartache. I decided that day that I really didn't want to come back here and be subjected to the crap that my friend, RB, barley, gwinky, the other FBetties and the poor female attorneys that work with ppnyc are subjected to. I decided to stay on hiatus for a few more weeks. I was planning on staying for a few more, but Sebby's obstinance on the PB sucked me back in. ETA: But my friend is an awesome woman, and so is RB and so is barely and so is gwinky and so are all the other FB Betties. And so am I. So fuck you if you think that my marital status is a mark against me. Fuck you if you think my childlessness makes me less of a woman. Fuck you if your inferiority complex about being "just" a paralegal makes you think that you have to find something that you're better at than us. |

I asked her why she didn't leave, and she said "Because I don't want to be 'divorced.' I'll be a 'divorcee.'" I replied that it was sexier than being blotchy. She was raised Catholic and her mother was pretty controlling and judgmental (and so she probably said the word "divorce" as if it were "murder,") but that didn't stop my friend from losing her virginity at 15 or otherwise having premarital sex, using birth control, being pro-choice, and otherwise being a rebel. She's also an extremely intelligent woman, notwithstanding the mistake she made at 25, and a feminist. But the label of 'divorced' still struck her as a stigma. I just didn't get it and I chalked it up to not being Catholic. By the way, she got over it and divorced him. She has always had a lot of cats. |
