If you can quote from your favorite work of literature, why can't I quote from one of my favorite movies?

Please reread: I agreed that the comments were insensitive and inappropriate. Not everything that is rude, however, is racist, even if it happens to be spoken by a white person to a black person. My critique of the journalist was for lazy race baiting, not political correctness.

I think you are stretching quite a long way to read a reference to Tarzan and Jane as a "suggestion that brutality among certain dark-skinned types is par for the course." I don't remember the Tarzan story very well, and I'm sure it is open to some racial criticisms in its own right, but Tarzan and Jane themselves were both white, right? And wasn't most of the brutality attributed to the apes, rather than to people of any color?

A fairer construction of the insensitivity in the judge's comments is that they could be read as essentializing Africa as some sort of homogenous jungle. To do so is obnoxious; it may be thought to show some anti-Africa or anti-third-world animus; it is without question inappropriate from any judge, much less one charged with resolving asylum claims; but it is not, without more, racist.

I say "without more," and admit freely that I am in no position to evaluate the judge's remarks in the context of anything else that was said at the asylum hearing. Indeed, that is my main quarrel with the reporter: she chose to glibly quote someone else's characterization of a judge's remarks as racist, without reporting enough facts to allow readers to draw any fair conclusions of their own. I call that poor reporting.

I'm afraid I don't recognize the movie. Python? Ah, well, quote away!

While we're on the subject of Monkeys, Apes, Deer and Snakes, I'd note that the brutality was generally AGAINST the apes, not by the apes. Tarzan is a story about noble savages being exploited by a corrupt civilization, but Jane is the dainty, civilized sophisticate able to make her peace with and even love the noble savage that is in us all. As deeply sexist as the story is, Jane is still supposed to be a hero role.

But I think the judge was trying to come up with a little racist humor, he was just not quite quick enough to pull it off. Dumb and racist, in other words.

Now my question is this: why does that surprise anyone in an asylum hearing? Isn't our entire immigration system supposed to abuse and spit out those third worlders who have the nerve to share the same aspirations most of our grandparents had and come here to seek a better life? Isn't everyone in this system just supposed to be corrupt, racists biggots? I thought dumb and racist was what people wanted of the Immigration system?

So the SB is reporting rumors of a Nutter/Kirkpatrick & Lockhart merger. Has anyone heard anything? I haven't. I'm too busy wondering where Billy Bulger is going to end up. You know he'll sign on with somebody, he can't keep his fingers out of the cookie jar.

I'd expect Bulger to go into a small practice, which he's had before (see 75 State Street).

He'll do his best to make sure it's honest graft, but he still won't want to share it. If he ever signs on with a big firm, you can bet it will just be a retirement sinecure.

With August winding down, does anyone else besides me think that the Sox are -GASP- going to choke? They score runs in bunches, but the bullpen, or lack thereof scares me.

And please, no more stories about Pedro and Nomar moving on. That would be crushing. The folks in Hyde Square would be very upset if Pedro left. And I was looking forward to watching Mia Hamm play for the Breakers after she and Nomar get married and she moves to Boston.

So much for all those rumors about Nomar and Lou Merloni being a little too close for comfort.

Now THAT's a bold prediction for the Sox. Yes, although I don't think it will be a choke. They won't take the needed 4 or 5 of 6 from the Yankees, and the A's will pick up speed.

Its beginning to look as though the big choke is on. There a game back from Oakland, their pitching is failing (what the hell happened to Lowe?!!!), and the A's are surging. That said, I really like this team and the new management. The team is really a unit, and management has shown that they will make mid-season acquisitions as needed. (If only they were as good at trimming out the dead wood---the runt Giambi.)

I just moved to Boston from San Francisco. In SF, I had many fond memories of Mitchell Bros, the Hustler Club, and Market St. Cinema. In there, just about anything goes, and it's always fun to get a little action from a really hot stripper for the price of a few hours work. Now I'm in Beantown. The only club I've been to here, Centerfolds I think, seems to suck. The girls all dance with all their clothes on, and don't seem to get nearer than 3 feet to you. This sucks. It's like watching a Sports Illustrated swimsuit video instead of having a hottie get you off. So, the big question is: Where to Bostonians go when they want to have a good time?
