I don't know whether it was Penske or Coltrane who suggested running on grass, but what a great idea!! I tried it this weekend (at the farm where my horse is -- the footing is good, I know all the trails, and it's lovely to boot!), and it was terrific. The whole lightning storm was sub-optimal, but I don't think it changes the soundness of the "run on grass" advice.

The problem is finding miles or relatively flat surface. If you have to be constantly looking for holes to avoid it ruins the run.

I don't have a farm to go to, but once I was in Annemasse France visiting friends. The guy is a top line runner, like comes in 1st or 2nd in road races. Annemasse is a suburb of Geneva. He takes me to this place about 5 miles from his house where there are trails for horse riding or running that go on for miles. dirt trails are better than grass I think. The coolest part was that we apparently crossed the Swiss/France border several times during the run.

Of course being from Detroit I've run the Detroit Windsor races so I've ran internationally before, But I bet it sounds so exotic to the rest of you to do this.

But at a farm where horses run, the footing has to be checked constantly. If a horse hurts its leg badly enough, he needs to be put down, so I'm confident that the footing on the trails and the mown parts of the grass is good. Where there is a deep rut or hole, it's usually marked with a little flag.

There are hundreds of acres on this farm, where I've been riding for years. I know all the best routes -- and the added benefit is that what seems like not very far on a horse, is quite a bit longer when I'm doing the running myself. However, it doesn't seem as long, because I'm used to the horse doing all the work. You know, it's not as easy as it looks to run through an alfalfa field. You really need to pick up your feet!

By the way, alfalfa smells goooooood.

It could be slippery, I suppose, and that could be substantially less than ideal, but at least your shoes won't get dirty.

Did you own a horse and farm when you lived south of 8 Mile, or did you run on those mean streets?

I don't own a horse farm. I keep my horse at a farm that is owned by somebody else.
