Porsche GT

OK, so I heard from my buddies in the Porsche club - who knew the passenger in the wrecked Porsche GT. Apparently he was good enough to go pro, but the new wife (of 7 months) wanted him to only stick to club days and weekend events - she thought it would be safer.

Guy who was driving was showing the passenger the "right" way around the track. Checkered flag had dropped and he should have been running a cool down lap - but didn't while the next group was being let on to the track. His fault. Car caught fire as well.
edited to fix heinous typo so lovingly pointed out by my clone

Sounds like the gnu wife was a total bitch. Serves her right.

Didn't you know that wet grass is the favored accelerant of arsonists everywhere? No surprise the car caught fire.

I was flipping through some BMW enthusiasts magazine at my gym last week and tran across an article rating all 5 series models from 97-2002. The 530 was rated best. So there.

I felt dirty when I realized what I was reading in public.

Aren't you the one who is all "the masses are morons!" and "why would I want to wear socks with dress shoes like everybody else?"

Dude, I needed a solid car I could beat the shit out of. The 530 was it. I didn't factor in how many people owned one. I just figured they'd been building it forever, so it must be bulletproof.

In fairness, and I know you just wanted to bust chops, but a 530 is not really for the masses and you know that. Honda Accord. Toyota Camry. That.

Pssst. Your prole is showing. Accord's a pity for Boalt grads. 530's a pity in for UPenn grads.

And Yale grads drive the 1996 Saab Wagon with the pushed-in bumper.

V70R

Drove the V70R yesterday. Liked the engine and the transmission. More on that later. The interior is very Volvo, but very nice. Nicer, in a quirky Volvo way, that the S4 Avant interior.

The thing definitely moves when you put your foot down. It was not sluggish at all anywhere north of 1500 RPM, but it still snaps your neck a little up around 3000. I think that I definitely felt the traction control doing some work; I need to read more about what systems it has and how they work. I was a little disappointed in the clutch; it felt like a clutch on a Cavalier I once drove: too light, too much travel, like I was extending my leg as far as it would go. I don't necessarily need to sit far back in the seat, but I felt closer to the wheel than I'm comfortable with, and I've never felt that way in a car before. The gearshift action was very nice. Also, with all the power, you don't really need to use it that much.

All in all, a great powerful wagon. I am driving the Avant again next week, at which time a final cut may be getting close.

I am thinking about going aftermarket with navigation this time. What do people know about the Garmin and Magellan units?

I've posted several times about my Magellan unit. Search for "RoadMate," but be aware any posts on the FB using that term are NSFW.

Not ashamed of being an asshole

Last week when asked about Patrick, Ecclestone caused a media stir by saying women "should be all dressed in white like all of the other domestic appliances."

But he apparently outdid himself when he called Patrick and repeated the same line. Patrick was stunned, she said, according to the newspaper.

"He told me those things, and I was like, I don't know, I just didn't make sense of it," she said Tuesday, the newspaper reported. "I can't believe he that would say that . . . directly to me."

We were driving home last weekend, and they played that quote on the radio. Both of us said "what an ass" at the same time.
He's a dick. I hope someone runs him over with a Hummer.
