In line with celebrating the good stuff, I've learned that a client of mine led the team that developed the stents they stuck in my heart. This is the kind of stuff that makes me feel really good about what I do.

I've also been prescribed drugs where my clients were listed among the inventors before. They've played a big role in treating my cancers.

That's awesome! I go to my client for some things, and it's always a pretty funny visit because inevitably we end up talking shop.

I chose NOT to go to my client for anything Kanan related, because I want the focus on him, not me.

I went to Hawaii so that I could make 2023 last just that much longer, and then the 737 issues stranded us there for a while longer. Hard to complain about being trapped there, but I can do it.

eta: Tropical storm in O'ahu on Monday led to rolling blackouts, one of which happened just as we were about to take a crowded elevator to our AirBnB on the 16th floor. Thankfully, the doors hadn't quite closed, karmic repayment for our holding them open so that another family could board.

Whoa, so you took the stairs or found a lower place to stay until power was back. PS after that I'm not sure I'd get on the elevator even after power came back.

We took the stairs, which wasn't so bad. I didn't think my wife was going to take the elevator the next morning, but once we learned that the blackouts had been planned and scheduled by the power company, the elevator didn't seem quite so scary.

During the blackouts, people came out onto their balconies all over Waikiki with their phone or flashlights -- it was pretty cool, like the videos of people banging pots and pans in Italy early in the pandemic.

So, another "Fuck Cancer" post. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last month. She had surgery on Tuesday of this week; waiting on pathology but optimistic. Due to winter storms and power outages, she has yet to sleep in her own bed since surgery, which is really starting to wear on her. Hotel to friends' house to my mom's house. Timing could not have been worse.

Fuck cancer and I hope your house survived the storm and related power outages. Our neighborhood got a lot of ice (5/8-3/4") but seems to have been sheltered from the wind, so we lost neither trees nor power. Friends over the hill were not so lucky.

We have been without power since Sunday afternoon, and I have to say that I'm getting tired of the vicious coffeehouse competition for outlets. And after I spent a bit of time and money making short ribs and scalloped potatoes last weekend, it was crushing to throw most of them out, along with everything else in our fridge.

Umm, shouldn’t you have a generator?

Seems like it.

PG&E has pushed back its estimate for the fix four times this week, and are now saying tomorrow afternoon at 5 pm.

On the plus side, I'm going to see Yo La Tango tonight. So I got that going for me. Which is nice.

The club has power, or are they acoustic?

The club was the Fillmore, in San Francisco, and it had power. Great show.

Gotta start somewhere. But as a city, it's all downhill from Sydney, mate.

My daughter spent 1/2 of 11th grade as an exchange student in Dunedin. She loved it, but like Adder said the cities are a little slow.

You going to the South Island?

Unfortunately all our stuff is north. Booked the deets too late and couldn’t get there.

"Many a time, at the end of a working day, Janine would talk to me about Flaubert's view of the world, in her office where there were such quantities of lecture notes, letters and other documents lying around that it was like standing amidst a flood of paper. On the desk which was both the origin and the focal point of this amazing profusion of paper, a virtual paper landscape had come into being the course of time, with mountains and valleys. Like a glacier when it reaches the sea, it had broken off at the edges and established new deposits all around on the floor, which in turn were advancing imperceptibly towards the centre of the room. Years ago, Janine had been obliged by the ever-increasing masses of paper on her desk to bring further tables into use, and these tables, where similar processes of accretion had subsequently taken place, represented later epochs, so to speak, in the evolution of Janine's paper universe. The carpet, too, had long since vanished beneath several inches of paper; indeed, the paper had begun climbing from the floor, on which, year after year, , it had settled, and was now up the walls as high as the top of the door frame, page upon page of memoranda and notes pinned up in multiple layers, all of them by just one corner. Wherever it was possible, there were piles of papers on the books on her shelves as well. It once occurred to me that at dusk, when all of this paper seemed to gather into itself the pallor of the fading light, it was like the snow in the fields, long ago, beneath the ink-black sky."

Hi all! And for a bit of good news, no chemo for my wife and a roughly 3% chance of reoccurring; we'll take it.
