Hotel Rwanda

So, I skipped out on work for a looooong lunch today and went to see Hotel Rwanda. I must revise my thoughts.

1. Don Cheadle was fantastic. The best performance I've seen by anyone in a very long time. If he doesn't win, it would be a real shame.

2. The fact that this movie wasn't nominated for 'Best Picture' is outrageous. I don't think it's a matter of the subject-matter making the movie, either. It was very well done. Almost had me in tears three times.

3. If you run a movie theater and you're showing Hotel Rwanda, why the FUCK do you hand out "Killer Bunnies" (or whatever) stickers when people are exiting?

4. I have no interest in seeing The Aviator. Can anyone convince me that I should?

5. Adding Chris Rock to the Oscar mix was a good idea. I will watch more than the last 15 minutes. And I hope he singles out and pisses off, Russell Crowe, that self-important jackass.

TM

ETA: In the theater, there was a group of maybe 20-25 kids with a group of adults. I'm not sure, but I think they (or more likely their parents') were from Rwanda because I heard accents that sounded much like the ones in the movie and the adults shushed the kids at the beginning and told them that this is something they all needed to see. After the first few minutes, the otherwise rowdy kids fell into silence and watched with only a sniffle, sigh or gasp to be heard for 2 straight hours. I imagine it had quite an impact on them.

Oh wait, if you'd put any work into it, there'd be a circled R, right? Cheap lazy bastard.

"Puurrrrr" would have been more appropriate. Or at least complimentary. Though, it's Friday, so maybe "rrrrrrrwwwwwwoooooorrrrrrwwwww" would be most appropriate.

Apparently Nick Nolte did not consult Romeo Dallaire at all and took many liberties with his portrayal. So please take his performance as fiction. Romeo Dallaire is a good guy, not the boozer in the film.

just fyi.

I'm a faucet and was in tears a lot during this movie. I'm still not sure why Finding Neverland got the nom and Hotel Rwanda didn't.

Only if you're a purist like me and want to see all the noms so you can rant when someone wins that shouldn't have. I will say that it was a lot better than I thought it would be, but it was also a lot longer than I thought it would be.

Wondering what I'm doing tonight I've been in the closet and feel all right

Ran out of Carbona Mom threw out the glue
Ran out of paint and roach spray too It's TV's fault why I am this way

Mom and pop wanna put me away
From the early morning movie to the late late show
After it's over nowhere to go And I'm not sorry for the things I do

My brain is stuck from shooting glue I'm not sorry for the things I do

Carbona not glue
Rock N Roll High School was on the other night. Late. Late late. But I stayed up anyway because the best part of the movie is the end. I forgot how much I enjoyed that movie. Well, the last 20 minutes anyway.

Disco Dolls from Outer Space in 3D will be on tonight late at the River Oaks Theater. (Is midnight late, or late late?)

I haven't seen it either - but I'm telling you here and now it wins Best Picture, Best Director and 4-5 other minor awards

Consider the source on this one, and don't get your hopes too high. Though it is from the director of "Girlfight," so it could end up looking cool. But the script is blah (though futuristic fantasy isn't really my thing). Agree that the Linklater/Scanner pic looks cool as shit, however.

So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts.

Someone tell me why, exactly, this guy was nominated for an Oscar. He was the worst part of Sideways. Great character, but he couldn't pull him off. A good actor would have stolen the movie from Giamatti with that role.

So, after the Knicks game last night*, I went to see Finding Neverland. Not a bad movie. But let me say this, Johnnie Depp can turn the biggest pile of cheese into something that makes sense. I guess if he can turn a theme-park ride into a hundred million dollar movie, he can make cheese watchable.

TM

*Str8, why does anyone care about the guy from SatC -- the one who shaved his head for the ho? He was at the game and the cameras and fans were all over him. Is he doing something else with his career?
You're talking about Jason Lewis, right? He's a model/actor, most famous for his SatC stuff, sure. But he's going to be He-Man. I think people think he has a remote shot to be the NEXT BIG THING in the Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt mode. So people get very excited for that sort of thing, even if it's a long shot.
