Seems the odds of that are pretty low, unless you drive off hours in marginally rural (but not too rural) areas, or you drive off a bridge.

The handsfree phone features are expensive as hell, at least when compared to "regular' wireless service. I am going to install my bluetooth handsfree kit and be done with it. Really, the only reason I am considering OnStar is for the energency features.

Pull the trigger on the M5

I also have an e39 540 6 spd sport, I would jump all over an 00 M5 for around 35k. Double check the maintenance schedule to make sure the p/o was at least changing out the synthetic every yr. (Never would have made the mileage interval) Also, dbl check oil consumption. The e39 M5 is known to have quite the thirst for oil, so you may want to ask the p/o re oil consumption. I don’t think the M5 had the same radiator issues we have with 540.

Lucky bastard, I am green with envy. I hope to be in the market for an 03 M3 or 00-03 M5 within the next 2 years!

Forgot to mention Bimmer or Roundel had a great write up a few months ago on the e39 line. Several pages devoted to the M5 and things to look out for. If you can’t find it PM me and I will try to scan.

Lease is coming up on 2003 325i. About 42k miles, buyout $20k.

What to do?

1. Buy it (hopefully w 6-100 warranty)

2. Buy certified 1-2 year old E60?

3. New E90?

4. Something else (like Toyota Land Cruiser).

1. 20,000 buy out for an 02 is pretty good. However, keep in mind no more std maintenance and if applicable, BMW autos are not built to last more than 100k.

2. The E60 still looks like a kia or diahatsu to me. The e60 m5 looks good, but the std e60 looks like it is hauling a load with the current rear tail light saggy ass configuration.

3. Probably your best option. I like the styling much more than the e60, cant wait for the new v8 m3.

4. I like the Land Cruiser. Although poor fuel economy from the v8 (assuming that is a consideration). Have you thought about a 3.0 x5?

Eh? What part of them isn't? I'll give you electronics and trim pieces, but 130k on my first one, same engine, same clutch/tranny, only one replacement of brakes, at around 90k. Other than the paint, it runs nearly like it did when I bought it. And I suspect there are people with twice the mileage on theirs.

Certainly, the slush box isn't. Next one will be a manual.

It's an 03, which I guess is even better.

I was referring to BMW slush box failure rates prior to 100k. (Widely documented in Roundel and Bimmer) Clutch? Sounds like you have a manual.

90k out of brakes! I thought I was doing good at 50k on my 1st set. I replaced the BMW factory dust pads with Axxis, same braking performance, no dust. Best mod I have made.

Yeah, a stick. More reason to stay with one.

As for brakes, might have been 80k, I really don't remember for sure, but it was up there. I thought it might be because I know how to shift down, but the clutch is still going, so obviously I haven't beaten it too much. Not driving in stop-and-go probably helped a lot. A lot of highway miles means a lot of not braking for long distances.

Correct he said BMW autos. Meaning slush box.

That's OK. Next car, wife will have to learn to drive stick or find change for the bus.

Right on.

I forced my wife to get a stick and learn. She wailed and gnashed her teeth, but now she loves it and won't go back.

Well, it's not really "teach." She knows how but won't.
