And of course he dropped the bar instead of slowly lowering it to finish the lift. That's just perfect Trump behavior: do half of what it takes but claim you did it all.

And the only time I drove a golf cart on a green like his imbecile dad was by accident after 10 beers.

If defending Roy Moore is what "conservativism" has become, let me be the first to douse it in gasoline and light the match.

I wouldn't have voted for Hillary (though in retrospect I would have written in someone other than Evan McMullin, who has since beclowned himself), but I would definitely vote for the D in the Alabama Senate race.

A significant majority of the provincial and incurious voters are also "tough on crime." By which I mean, in favor of jailing people unlike them. Or managing the poor and mentally ill via Giuliani's "broken windows" concept.

For the right, this is no longer about any one Congressional or Senate contest. It is about ideology. Republicans want to reshape government in Kansas' image--eliminate regulation, destroy or eliminate agencies and whole departments, transform what they view as an unfair tax system (which necessarily includes curtailing support for all safety net functions) that penalizes the rich into one that rewards the rich, remove protections for the vulnerable based on the idea that such protections penalize straight, white, Christian men, and fix the voting system so that Republicans increase the undue electoral influence they currently have so that they remain in power. That's it.

It does not matter how they achieve these goals. If it takes 50 Moores to privatize education or revise the tax code to take away "giveaways," then so be it. If we have a President in office who is clearly being worked by Russia who will rubber stamp this complete overhaul, who cares? It does not matter who sits in what office at any level as long as they actually get what they want. The Republican Party is a fucking cult and achieving these objectives are all that matters.

It occurred to me today (or I am high, dunnu) what if he is being worked by Russia to plunge us into civil war?

World Cup Schadenfreude

The only thing that has made me feel a little bit better about the World Cup is the fact that Italy lost a qualifying match with Sweden, failing to qualify for the first time in 60 years, and that the small contingent of Swedish fans, nestled in the upper decks of the stadium, serenaded the remaining Italian fans with an impromptu version of Monty Python's "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life." Even though I just typed that sentence, it seems too improbable to be true, but look!

So I have to say that all of these recent stories from the left finally admitting Bill Clinton was a sexual predator leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Convenient that it is now, 20 years later, after Hillary lost two races for President and the left has little use for them.

Why does Clinton get a pass? I just don't get it.

What's more disheartening to me is that apparently G. H. Bush is also inappropriate at the very least. Perhaps that explains the Bush/Clinton love fest of recent years?

That's where Yglesias kind of loses me. Write that piece centering Broadrick, Wiley or Jones and I think he's got a point. But he mostly talks about a relationship where the alleged victim said she wasn't a victim (of the sex).

He got a pass at the time at least in part because these claims were old and being pushed/backed by people with obvious political agendas and a track record of denying sexual harassment was even a thing. Also, because as a society we were still a decade and a half from starting to believe women, especially when it was politically inconvenient.

It's good that we are woke enough now to have the conversation, but interesting that it didn't come up 18 months ago when picking the Democratic nominee.

I don't think he gets a pass, and agree with at least most of what's in the Vox article that SEC Chick linked to (I might agree with all of -- just don't recall). But that doesn't mean that I believe every allegation against him, either, and the fact that the people pushing the Broaddrick/Willey/Jones stuff had been behind endless efforts to delegitimize him by pushing theories about Vincent Foster and Whitewater (to take only two examples) that not only were not credible but were also transparently political -- that meant that a lot of people didn't take them seriously, for better or worse. Just as a bunch of Alabama Republicans who are supporters of Roy Moore see the recent stories as just one more effort by his foes to undo him.

IIRC, and I may not because it's been more than two decades and I have tried to recycle those brain cells for higher and better purposes, most of the allegations against Clinton involved consensual conduct, which doesn't mean it wasn't wrong. Again IIRC, the Broaddrick story was quite different, which made it less believable for me.

Right, you would like told hold Hillary accountable for the behavior of her husband and/or seeking to protect him. Because that's not complicated as all get out or anything.

Broaddrick, Willey and Jones were alleged to be non-consensual.

We discounted all of them for the reasons you stated. I don't feel great about that in retrospect, because we've got to err on the side of believing women about these things.

Yes. Which is why I said "don't feel great about" and not "we definitely should have believed them." Part "there really was a vast right wing conspiracy" and part, "I don't want to go back and look at it with different eyes because it's irrelevant now."

We're all being worked by Russia, and many other forces, to engage in a civil war. And right now I think we are in a cold civil war. Certainly a cultural one.

There's only one historically foolproof method by which to control a society, be it your enemy or your own: Divide and conquer.

Imagine if the poor of all colors and backgrounds banded together and realized how badly they're getting fucked. How brutally the system is stacked against their kids. How they're being manipulated and bled dry by rentier capitalists. How little their votes count.

Imagine if these people stopped arguing with each other and hating each other and decided to form a voting bloc that demanded actual economic justice?

The funny thing is that the way the numbers work out, it's really a minority rearguard action against a pretty clear supermajority that's winning. For all the dude's marching with tiki torches, there's way more people who think that stuff is backwards.

Of course, the question is the relative levels of investment people have in their beliefs. Lot's a of the supermajority are as much apathetic to the grievances of the rearguard as much as actively opposed (thus last November).

Oddly, I think "if the poor whites only knew" doesn't give them enough credit. They know. It's just that they what they really care about is relative status. They can't band together with groups that they view as below them.
