Hey. I know from chains in mini malls. I'm qualified as an expert witness on the subject.

[He's from Chicago. Might want to go back and edit.]

Okay. Strike everything negative I said about Dallas, but keep all of the Phoenix stuff.

Exactly.

I liked climbing Camelback though.
Well, I'd say there's just about nothing worse than going to a new city for a short visit and writing the whole place off based on some minor thing about it that rubbed you the wrong way, like how unbelievably early the fucking bars close, goddammit.

that was the beauty of his rant- he wrote off Chicago also...

"the farther east you get the better." It lent substance to his observations that he slagged his own.

Oh? And how much time have you spent in Dallas? No, not Plano, not Midcities, not Metroplex. Dallas. One of the five best (seriously) restaurant cities in the country and I'm not talking chains in mini malls.
What are the other four?

L.A. sucks.

And if I ever visit there, I'll confirm it.

And you have a gift for getting to the heart of his post. He is discussing the problem of post seventies rennaissance "cities". the ones with the faux ethnic architencture (see for example Irvine's contribution to its downtown - the mega mall-, and housing complexes which is faux mexican) and the convenicience shopping for the car culture people. This is the problem of many sunbelt cities, including Phoenix, and Vegas and the affluent parts of the Southland. Its like the catalog culture decided to build cities based on the same stores everywhere, and ultra convenience. The restaurants are quasi chain- like Emeril Lagassie's eight Take It UP a Notch Bistro and the people who enjoy this kind of thing probably rate themselves based on what brand names they purchase. They are the fake tits of the urban landscape.

Aw, c'mon. Phoenix is the only place you can go where you can drive outside the city on any night, and find some out-in-the-desert outdoor bar-and-music venue with cheap cold beer, decent sounds, and more (scantily clad) women than men. Try finding that in Chicago.

Chicago, as a city, is insecure. But only about NYC.
