The only thing LCDs are good for are computer monitors and cell phone screens.

We've really liked our Aquos LCD. Our main decision point was size though when we were tv shopping a couple of years ago. Our living room set up just isn't large tv friendly. Since we were looking in the 30-35" range, it was no contest. Also, as pony's link points out, LCD's are better if you are doing any daytime viewing (like, for example, watching football on a Sunday afternoon in a room with big windows). Better contrast for that sort of viewing.

Plasmas might be better if you are talking about a media room sort of experience though.

2. We have a 30" Samsung LCD HDTV and it's terrific. Plasma wasn't even an option.

Pony's article says nothing about color purity, black level, ghosting, fast motion or screen door effect.
But whatever. My plasma is just fine for daytime football.

Should I give my old computer to some UCLA student? It feels slightly icky because I have slept with him, but on the other hand, I was just going to send it back for recycling anyway.

Whichever one I do, I need to wipe the hard drive, yes? How do I do that? I will google, but I trust some of you to have an informed opinion on this.

definitely wipe the harddrive. Since you slept with him, I would go for the multiple-wipe option.

Why? He's already got whatever I've got.

He's more likely to try to snoop than some random person. That's all. Dirty as that sounded.

Oh. True. A couple of his roommates are computer science majors. So it would be helpful if someone could recommend a particularly strong wiper. Flinty sent me this link: http://dban.sourceforge.net/ but if you are recommending a really thorough wipe, maybe you have a suggestion for a second one?

OK. My stay-at-home-mom sister, who has 2 kids both of whom have been in school since January 3rd, and who has a college student babysitter who lives with them, finally managed to clear up her schedule enough to mail my cell phone back to me on Tuesday, so I have it back. I am feeling much happier about life. No blackberry and no cell phone make fringey a sad sad girl.

Mac mini media center

OK, now that I can dowload Star Trek, I can see my new macbook pro's 160 GB HD will soon be full.

I was thinking of taking over my son's mac mini, adding an external HD and making it the media center for music and videos and giving him my old powerbook.

He has one of the older power PC processor ones.

Any thoughts?

Will it be too slow if I later want to get an apple TV and stream?
