Ah, right - I forgot who has the crappy noisy dishwashers and who doesn't. I'm now having a minor crisis wondering a) whether my water is cheaper at night, b) whether I should be micromanaging my utilities along those lines and c) whether even if I wanted to I could constitutionally stand to do it. On the other hand, I have a fancy-ish dishwasher that I think purports to use less water, so maybe these concerns aren't for such as I. But maybe pennies add up. And as a poor divorcee living in an expensive mortgage, perhaps I should pay better attention. Augh.

How do dryer buzzers somehow mysteriously get turned on, only to scare the bejesus out of people who both swear that they weren't the one to turn that damned thing on? And why are dryer buzzers so reCOCKulously loud in the first place? If your manse is so spacious that you would be unable to hear the buzzer go off otherwise, you should have hired help waiting by the dryer to fold your laundry anyway.

I have been finding the dishwasher discussion fascinating, by the way. As someone who has never bought a dishwasher, I've often wondered which features get homeowners the most excited.

Did I mention I bought a food processor? Yes, really!! First one I've ever owned. I'll keep you posted on which fingers I almost slice off with it and how.

Mine is far too loud and, worse, can't be turned off.

It's not a Kenmore product, though, and I hope to replace it soon with a Kenmore that has an optional, soothing beep instead of a buzz.

BTW, I predict: index and middle, with the blade, removing it from your dishwasher.

Never quite sure with water--we pay a fixed rate regardless of usage, so I'm a little detached from municipal water pricing issues.

The variable electric pricing here will apparently include fairly short notice of uber-peak-pricing--not something I'm interested in dealing with until I see how it works for others.

I think dryers buzz because if you leave your clothes in the dryer, they can get wrinkles that they wouldn't have if you took them out promptly. Washers they are as wrinkled as they are going to get after the spin cycle, so as long as you don't leave them in for days, it should be fine.

Yes, I know fancy-pants dryers keep periodically doing one partial turn to keep clothes from wrinkling.

Both my sister and my parents have Bosch dishwashers and I covet one. They are so so so so quiet.

Sorry to jump in late on thread, but I just did a d/w purchase. Most recent Consumer Reports best buy was Kenmore 1603 (obsolete, now Kenmore 1372 from same manufacturer), which was rated by them as quiet as the Boschs, washed as well and was easier to use. Like most other $500 washers, but unlike the Bosch, it has a built-in food disposer, so you don't need to clean the filter. (It doesn't have the stainless tub if you care about that. ) Haven't got it yet, so no firsthand comment, but feel pretty good about research.

I have a KitchenAid. The quietest dishwasher I've ever had.

Stainless interior: suggestions on how to clean after the dishwasher threw up on itself for a month or so before you stopped using it and were told by the plumber there was virtually no water getting in due to the wrecked intake valve? It was leaving an alternately grimy and chalky residue on things, and the inside of the washer is now stained. I've scrubbed with general countertop cleaner and with dishwashing liquid on a plastic sponge, and Flitzed the interior, which may or may not have been a good idea (improved the appearance, but that stuff has its own oil to it).

Since it seems you are willing to get into the DW and scrub, use Bar Keepers Friend--this should clean off basically anything on the steel. An easier (but untested by me) recommendation is to run the DW w/o detergent, but with a large-ish bowl of white vinegar on the bottom rack.

I haven't read the rest of the responses but I have the Fishers & Paykel double drawer and I love it. I have heard of some people having problems with them but I am really enjoying mine as I never have a full load and its nice to run the single drawer. Mine are relatively new, but my best friend has had hers for about 5 years and she loves them as well...
