See below. I am not sure why being the hub of a major airline or having access to highways and trains makes the city particularly friendly to gay and lesbian men, but the internet does not lie.

"Why is the Twin Cities metropolitan area composed of such a high percentage of gay and lesbian men? An analysis provides the following reasons:

The Twin Cities are politically progressive. Minnesota is one of only nine states that has passed laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. The city of Minneapolis has enacted domestic partnership ordinances, which allow same-sex partners to register their unions. Minnesota also has openly gay and lesbian elected officials in both city and state offices.

Corporations in Minnesota value diversity. The Twin Cities Gay and Lesbian Workplace Alliance, a consortium of gay and lesbian workplace organizations, has over 70 members (of which AT&T is a member), and is a model for the nation. Many of the major corporations headquartered in the Twin Cities, including Allina Health Systems, the Star Tribune, Honeywell, Northern States Power, the University of Minnesota, the St. Paul Companies and Imation, have enacted domestic partnership benefits for their gay and lesbian employees.

Minneapolis is the transportation center for the upper Midwest. We are accessible via major highways. We are also served by Amtrak and all major bus lines.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul International is located 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis. Transportation from the airport to your participating hotels can easily be handled by Airport Express serving all hotels at a price of $10.00 one way or $15.50 round trip. Taxi fares from the airport to downtown range from $18.00 to $23.00.

Minneapolis is the world headquarters for Northwest Airlines, and is also served by all other major airlines. Domestically, the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport provides a total of 1,138 non-stop flights daily to 160 cities, equaling 112,930 total seats.

As a testimony to our accessibility, the United States State Department last fall selected Minneapolis to host the 1998 International Telecommunications Union Plenipotentiary Conference. This conference will bring 3,500 delegates from 184 countries to Minneapolis for 30 days.

We know how important quality, convenience, and affordability are to visitors to our city. With 5,000 hotel rooms in downtown Minneapolis alone, 3,649 are within a five minute walk of the Minneapolis Convention Center, restaurants and shopping, and 3,419 are connected by an enclosed, climate controlled skyway system which makes downtown Minneapolis impervious to rain, sleet, or snow. The metro are offers 22,000 hotel rooms.

The Twin Cities has a vibrant cultural and fine arts identity"

What was that that you said last night? Oh, here it is:

"Do you really think anyone gives a crap about the "poor, uneducated underclass"? Do you really think I do?"

I think that it illustrates how true that is. You've tried to backpedal and tapdance a couple of times when you realized how you sounded (What was it: "My comments about the poor uneducated underclass (or whatever it was that mmmm called them) really had nothing to do with the folks on the Gulf Coast and were more sweeping generalizations about the poor uneducated underclass all over America."), but it's pretty clear from your priorities that you are more concerned about animals, who you may perceive as helpless, than you are about some humans, who you may perceive as being responsible for their own positions and undeserving of empathy, compassion or assistance in a situation like this.*

* See, for example: "Here's the thing that pisses me off about that mentality. There's a way out of being the "poor, uneducated underclass" in this country. Anyone can join the armed forces and bootstrap their way to a better life. And yes, I say this as the soon-to-be ex-wife of a US Army officer....I think that a lot of the "poor, uneducated underclass" thinks they are entitled to a hell of a lot. And that sense of entitlement bewilders me."
Man, you read a lot into my posts that frankly, just isn't there.

I was not backpedalling when I said that my comments about the poor, uneducated underclass wasn't about the folks in the gulf coast. It's the truth. I do hate the whole "woe is me, I'm poor and the government should do more for me" mentality the poor, uneducated underclass seems to hang onto so dearly. I think that people can help themselves, change their own damn lives, make their situations better for their families. But I think they've got to choose to. And I don't think the answer is to continue to provide them with all the crap they've come to believe they are entitled to.

That said, I think the situation in New Orleans is beyond tragic, and I think the people there need help. I think sometimes you've got to look beyond what people deserve and just fix the fucking problem.

You have no idea what my priorities are. But you do seem to think that your priorities are morally superior to mine. And that makes me want to smack you in the teeth.

give him a break. what he did was childish and Stupid, but those boards were empty anyway.

i read a story about a hotel in Detroit that had terrible occumpency rates. It teamed up with a guy who gives tours of bombed out buildings and neighborhoods. People actually come here to take the tour. This hotel, which needs the city to coemback for real to be vibrant, happily took in the few guests it had, even though those people were only there to mock the city. In other words, visitors, even deliquent ones, were better than no visitors.
