DAN QUAYLE???

Until we grow the fuck up in this counttry and act like adults about sex and personal mores, we're going to get more and more shit in the Oval Office. Decent, intelligent people tend to experiment a bit in life, and they make mistakes, and they have moral shortcomings. Until we address those shortcoming as a normal, excusable human foibles, we'll only get the idiots the religious right will tolerate.

I don't want to sound like some Berkeley douchebag, but WTF is wrong with this nation? We just excused gunmakers from lawsuits. We tolerate insane violence in our media. We have scumbags stealing our tax money for polictical gain (I hope Ted Stevens loses his sight for that goddamned bridge to nowhere). Yet we're debating whether abortion should be legal, and whther there's moral deficit on the Left?

There's a huge deficit in this country we ought to deal with before our economic or moral deficits, and thats the deficit of fucking brains in the political arena. Until we have some honest discourse, instead of sumbags who play to their idiot constituents, we'll never get anywhere. I hate to say it, but a temporary monarchy run by practical, sensible thinkers would be a very nice thing right now.

Off with the heads of all the idiots (about half the country).
Maybe you have said this before, but who do you think, among the politicians in this country, is a worthy candidate?

Sebby, I am surprised a feminist like you is so ignorant of what you are discussing. Rape and sexual abuse/harassment are not crimes of sex. They are crimes of violence and/or abuse of power via an non-consensual sexual act. Way to cheapen the discourse and degrade the plight of millions of women.

You really are off base to say that about George HW Bush.

He had a political tin ear, and made a couple big mistakes (i.e. Quayle and the "read my lips" pledge) -- but he was surely a talented and competent man, and a reasonably good President.

Bush I was a smart guy who did next to nothing. Compared to the visionary he followed, he wasn't shit.*

* I'm not saying I agreed with everything Reagan did, but he was a visionary, and he did achieve some important things in office and change the country.

My point was this -- It is an unfortunate (but true) fact that a lamentably high percentage of men in this country could be credibly accused of sexual assault and/or rape if you look closely enough and far enough back in their history (especially the young and/or drunken college days).

I will take you at your word that this is not an issue for you, as you were chased during college.

I don't know who said, but to say rape has nothing to do with sex was a bad notion to begin with and I believe is no longer how it is considered, generally. I confess to not being on the vanguard, but some years ago I recall being glad we could get over the "it's not ever sexual, ever at all" perspective.

No, CW is sex, and violence.

I agree with that. Like Clinton, Bush I's legacy is as much wasted potential as it is any specific act of governance or leadership.

I was sloppy, I didn't mean "any" to imply there were none, I meant any as in "pick any random R (or D) and you can dig up a sexual abuse claim".

There are certainly some small percentage on both sides of the aisle.

Possibly, although few (excepting politicians and other cousins from the Kennedy family) would have the serial aspect to the behaviour. Not to excuse any bad act, but one drunken night of "he said, she said" is different in magnitude from the history of allegations against Clinton.

Generally I agree, to the extent that it is an act of violence where the instrumentality to carry out the violence and/or infliction of abusive power over the victim is a sex act.

Poor Kofi. He's been trying so hard to avoid this - even to the point of doctoring the report on the investigation to hide Syria's involvement. (Hint: turn off "track changes" before submitting doctored SuperSecretTopConfidential report to world leaders. What a dufe.)

Can't resist telling this one.

He promised he'd not get involved in the report - he wouldn't try to sugar-coat, or hide anyone who might be named. Big-time promise.

The report is e-mailed out to the distribution list. If you hit the right buttons, a section that now says "several unnamed Syrian leaders are implicated in . . . " is shown as being the substitute for the names of the top four Syrians including the prez. Time tracking shows that the change was made about six minutes after Kofi was logged in to meet with the report author.

Too funny.

Yes, the American people care about that. Sorry Sebby but you and you're effette ivy tower faux intellectual NYTimes-reading, Georgetown-UpperEastSide-Berkeley-salon-pontificating looney leftists are going to be disappointed, again, the Commander in Chief has a go here.
