Say you were at a bar from approximately 8:00 PM to 1:30 AM, and you opened your tab shortly after getting there. You drink fairly heavily through the night and buy a few other people drinks, because you know that the people who reserved the bar for a private party have to generate a certain amount in drink sales during the first three hours or else they have to make up the difference.
So you're closing out at the end of the night, and your tab is somewhere in the the $30 range, which is at least $100 less than you thought it would be. It's possible that someone else picked up your tab, and the most likely candidate has already denied it. The other candidate is likely hungover as hell and probably incommunicado for another five or six hours (assuming he made it home last night). It's also possible that the bar fucked up and put your drinks on another person's tab who shares your last name. If that's the case, that person is the same person who will have to make up to the bar whatever the shortfall was.
Do you make further inquiries as to what happened to your tab, or do you rejoice that you drank a hell of a lot without having to pay a hell of a lot? Does it matter that you feel sort of guilty that the hosts are probably going to have to come up with several hundred dollars to make up the difference to the bar? Do you just kick what you thought your drink tab should have been to the hosts?
