Oh come on -- I doubt anyone gains weight to spite his/her spouse and in order to make him/herself unattractive. If he really did say "I'm tired of having a fat wife" she likely (and not inappropriately) understood him to be saying "I don't want to be married to you if you are fat," which is not only hurtful but shows that he cares more about her looks than he does about her feelings -- which is uncool at best.
