Anyway, you can't "half-volley a ball in the air" in the context or receiving a long pass. Half-volleying a ball means that is has bounced once since it has been hit by the other player.

You're partially correct. I was speaking of a full volley. So I was wrong there. But a half-volley is kicking it immediately after it bounces, not just a ball that has bounced, e.g., what many goalies do in lieu of punting.
Just like in tennis, but w/out goalies and punting.
