The Chicago Tribune did a series of articles on Major Schmidt and the Illinois Air National Guard generally. As one might imagine, they weren't flattering.
As recently as last week or two weeks ago they were reporting multiple "mis-releases" (or something like that) in exercises over Wisconsin.
On the one hand, its a long way from a malicious intent. On the other hand, this asshole should have apologized personally to each family.
The big picture according to the Tribune was that its very difficult to have F-15 pilots training on a weekend basis. Well, not really just weekends, but not enough to keep a perfect edge.
I'm not positive, but I think the CO of the unit (if it was someone different) may have been subject to more harsh criticism.
