I love the Amazing Race and last night was an average show for AR (which is 10 times better than almost every other show). But you need to start watching 'Trading Spouses.'
Last night they swapped moms from two different families -- one from a rich family and one from a really poor one. It was a horrible, horrible, horrible, wonderful show. The rich mom was a total bitch who did no work at her own house and no work at the new house. She was rude, lazy, insulting and pushy and demanded that everyone cater to her every need. I can't believe the dad of the poor family didn't throw her out on her ass, but I guess the $50,000 that they could really use had something to do with that. He was still very polite to her in situations where I would have hit her with a brick.
The poor mom in the rich house was shocked by how these people live. They took her out for sushi and she tried some to be polite and tried to be friendly and accomodating with everyone in the family, including the grandmother who the rich mom treated like shit.
It is a very mean concept overall, because each mom gets to decide how the new family will spend the money. As soon as rich mom heard this, it gave her carte blanche to be a lazy fucking bitch, in my opinion. The rich family clearly doesn't need it, but the poor family could really use it and she's going to spend it on something totally fucking inappropriate. The poor mom is saying things like, "I need to get to know these people so that I can figure out how they would want this money spent." The rich mom has put no thought into it, but continues to stress that she is helping this family with her "positivism."
It's crap tv, but it becomes an interesting study in class, race and ethnicity by default.
