A friend of mine is organizing the Coca Cola event, and that thing looks like it's going to be pretty damned huge. I was brainstorming with the director of one of the organizations that I am involved in at lunch, and I think that we could throw a pretty fun fundraising event to coincide with the weekend, but I wanted to make sure that people wouldn't be distracted with the influx of out-of-town type events.

Disclaimer: I am not in a CTRHtSB, but my family has done fundraisers and events at those and the final four, etc.
Your success will depend on your target audience and type of event. Are you aiming to attract out-of-town people or local people?
There are a lot of parties and a lot of people clamoring for attention, so you need a fantastic hook to get people to pick you. It also helps if you have a very famous athlete involved. You could also partner with a group reknowned for their functions -- then people will show because they recognize the promoter, dj, club, pr link, etc.

Edited to add: semi-famous athletes will show up if you pay their appearance fee. Unless you are friends with the very famous athlete, you might end up having to pay em, too.
