I get creeped out watching it, especially when they tell me that the 4 foot something, 80 something pound young lady I'm having trouble looking at already is actually of age and in her 20's looking like that. All that training must stunt their growth and do horrible things to them.
As for the makeup, it may be a function of projecting their expressions, sort of like the clowns in the circus. The judges can see you smiling if your smile is freakishly wide up close...

Mrs. Flinty and I were watching a little of the gymnastics preliminaries, and I was having the exact same problem. I could swear those women were 12, but no, then the announcer says she's 18 or 25 or something outrageous. For some reason, Mrs. Flinty could tell the ones who looked young from the ones who actually were young. I had no such ability and it made me uncomfortable. I didn't know when to say "Nice ass" and when to keep that to myself.
