The thing that rang the most true for me on this was some talking head over the weekend saying that this was a test of the Dems' willingness to fight the good fight. Leaving the charges unanswered would give the implicit message that Kerry lacked the will to do what it takes to win, and thus could not be trusted to represent our nation in war and/or diplomacy, where winning is the only thing. Bush is a pussy who lacks the resolve to lead us in war and/or diplomacy.
More seriously, I think this was a tactical error on Bush's part, but nonetheless the right thing to do. I'm still not going to vote for him, but my opinion of him has just gone up.
