Meanwhile, I'd eliminate close encounters from the list altogether. A few UFOs does not sci-fi make. What do you have: a crazy guy on a quest. Other similarly crazy people. Climb a mountain while the US army can't find you. See a spaceship land and an alien barely appear. And that's it? The movie had no payoff, no explanation, no anything. If close encounters counts as sci-fi, then I nominate every Simpsons with Kang and Kodos involved.
